Hey guys, sorry to post AGAIN in one day. I was just clipping Gizmo’s toenails and I noticed on both of his front paws there was a red bump at the base of one of his nails. It seemed to be the same nail on both paws. I’ve always noticed these little bumps at the base of the toe but it was more red than usual. I tried searching and couldn’t find any information. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture. Admittedly, he hadn’t had his nails clipped since August is it just from the nail getting too long? His cage has a chloroplast floor but he does have some spots that are covered with a fluffy fleece pad.

It’s probably sore hocks. Usually rabbits get it on their back feet, but if it’s really bad, they can get it on their front paws.

It’s not okay for your rabbit to go that long without nail clippings. My house rabbit society reccomends trimming them every 2-3 weeks minimum. If they get too long, your rabbit will stand in a weird position because standing normally will hurt their feet because of the nails, and they will get painful sores on their feet. It can also be caused for super sensitive rabbits by hard flooring. It would really help him if you changed to something softer like fleece or towels all over the cage.

They can get infected and be dangerous for your rabbit (I’ve never seen this, but apparently I think it’s true) if left unhelped. I reccomend Bag Balm, and soaking your rabbits feet in epsom salt.

Check your rabbit’s back feet as well. If you pull apart the fur on the bottom of the foot, you should see a pale pink callus. If the callus is red, inflamed, or cracked then you should treat them as well. Soaking the feet in tea bags should also help toughen up the calluses.

I picture would help, but it’s probably sore hocks.

Well, on the nail clipping – it really depends on how fast your rabbits nails grow/if they wear them down naturally. Powder for example, whenever I go to clip their nails, most of his are super short still. His nails just do not grow. I have no idea how he wears his nails down, but he seems to have it down, whatever he’s doing. I only have to clip his every 2 months or so and then it’s just snipping off the edges. Stickers on the other hand never seems to wear her nails down, so she needs them clipped more often.

Can you get a picture of the spot on your buns nails?

Thanks for the input! I’m going to try to get a picture..I so wish I had had my phone near me earlier to snap one! I have to have my mom’s help clipping his nails because he is very jumpy, but we’ve made a commitment to clip them at least every 3 weeks. I also put a big fleece pad down after posting this, so his floor is now covered in soft fleece I’ll try and get a picture tonight or tomorrow!
