My sister found a kitten outside her house all by itself in the rain this morning underneath her car. I’d say it’s only a few weeks old but maybe a month? They gave it some warm milk and have been feeding it bologna and lunch meats since they are soft so he can eat them. He is being kept now inside an old guinea pig cage because they don’t have a litter box or anything. I am thinking of taking him in and keeping him in my room (where my rabbit is kept) if they cannot keep him or just don’t want to. I have a few questions about this situation. I am planning on giving him a bath to eliminate flea options before bringing him in my room at all. Can I use Jude’s (my rabbit’s) litter as the kitten’s litter since I can’t use clay based litter? I know that they make a cat litter that is paper based and okay for rabbits to use also but isn’t any newspaper litter pretty much the same thing? Jude uses newspaper pellets and the only added ingredient is baking soda. I know I’ll have to use 2 separate litter boxes and I am planning on keeping the kitten in the guinea pig cage on my bed until they are bonded since Jude is free roam of my room. I have a queen sized bed and only take up a little less than half when I sleep so he would be perfectly safe up here with me until they are bonded well enough to let both be free roam by themselves. Any suggestions/opinions are appreciated!

I have cats and rabbits and buy the recycled paper litter (Yesterday’s News) for both. Corncob litter is ok but smells more.
It is probably best to put the cat litter box in a place the rabbit cannot climb…for my cats their box is on a shelf. Cats can carry diseases that harm people and rabbits especially if they are mousers as mine are.
And no clay litter at all.
Good luck, the kitten probably will like the rabbit.

alright, I’ll probably have to keep his litter box on my bed for the mean time if I get him and thanks for the comment. The kitten is super tiny and I doubt it’s ever even seen a mouse. Could it still have diseases? I was planning on keeping his litter box separated in some way anyways.

It would be a good idea to have the kitten checked by a vet and get it some proper food. If it is only 4 weeks old it is not going to live long eating processed meat and definitely no cows milk, that will give it diarhhea. It will need proper kitten milk, (not the formula although you could use that to build up its strength) and water. Revolution Puppy and Kitten is good for fleas, mites and other parasites it will also worm. If you buy the pack of three then you also have a dose for your bun on hand if needs be… However as I said, the vet is the first place the little one needs to visit.

I’d also recommend you get the kitten checked before applying even the Revolution as if it is weak or unwell it’s system may not be able to manage and it would be better for the vet to medicate.

it’s not me feeding it lunch meats or milk, it’s my sister. I told her that she needs to get kitten formula and feed it that and she said ‘I can’t afford that.” I am trying to convince her to give me the kitten but she’s never had an animal herself. She’s had it for 2 days and it doesn’t seem to be hungry and eats lunch meats just fine and hasn’t been sick or anything so i’m guessing now that he’s older than a month. I am still trying to convince her to give him to me since she knows nothing about animal care. I have a friend who’s mom is a dog groomer but she started to go and be a vet but never finished so I’m thinking of just taking him to her and having her check him our for me for free since she knows all about that kind of stuff. If I do get him I will keep him on my bed with no physical contact until I am sure he is okay to be with my rabbit. I will probably get a table that I could put at the end of my bed for his litter box and food and stuff so they don’t fuss about that.

btw guys I am most likely NOT getting the kitten. Instead of taking the risk of him being with my bunny I bought my sister a litter box and litter, proper kitten replacement formula, and some kitten chow. I went to her house and gave him a bath in kitten shampoo (not flea shampoo, just normal because he doesn’t have fleas) and he’s happy and healthy for now.

You’re a good sister! I know nothing about kittens and cats. Maybe there are info websites (even like BB) for kitten and cat care that she might be willing to read.

Even after buying all the stuff for the kitten my sister doesn’t think she has to spend every day on the poor kitten cleaning up after it, feeding it, etc. I AM going to take the kitten in but only until I can find it a good home. They were planning on taking it to a pound today and the pound in my area has a 3 day kill effect. (after the animal is there for 3 days and not adopted they euthanize it) which I was not okay with. It’s only a little over a month by the looks of him now and doesn’t deserve to not have a good life. I am getting him today and giving him a bath and setting him up a place on my bed. He doesn’t have fleas or worms because I had bought deworm medicine to be on the safe side and he’s been getting it every day in his food since Thursday and I checked him yesterday for fleas when they told me I could take him. I’m still not going to let their be any physical contact between the bunny and kitten (keeping the kitten on bed and the bunny off bed AND washing hands after handling kitten and after handling bunny if i’m going to touch the opposite pet since neither one has been to a vet yet.) I’ve filled out 3 forms for getting Jude (bunny) neutered and still no call..I guess I’m going to have to call the vets office instead of the other way around.

You can get an automatic cat litter box if cleaning is a problem.
You do not have to be so worried about disease transmission that you cannot have both animals.
They can both be together….it is the cat poop that is the problem for other animals including people.
If disease transmission among rabbits cats and people were an enormous issue most everyone would be dead.
I mentioned it because my rabbit that died would go into the cats litter box. My current bunnies go around the cats but not their letterbox. Nobody is sick.

And fleas….Advantage Multi is cat and rabbit safe. Just a suggestion but cats can bond with rabbits quite easily.
And you will not find a more maintenance free pet than a cat. Rabbits actually take more involvement to establish a good relationship with a person.

Why would they do that if they knew you were willing to take the kitten?! That’s horrible. Thank you so much for taking this poor thing in, he’s lucky to have you!
