So Teddy is now 5 months and a half. I know I have to get him neutered soon, so I called a local vet who’s experienced with rabbits and they told me to call back and make an appointment for an examination when Teddy is 6 months old because they can’t operate on a rabbit who’s younger than that, so I guess that makes sense. So, as of right now he’s not neutered yet, so on to the weird behaviors question.

Ever since I got Teddy, he’s very independent and doesn’t like to be touched or held at all. He’s a very lovable and hyper rabbit and he’s never aggressive or bite (he does like to nibble on toes and other things though). The only time he demands to be touched is when he’s not moving around a lot or laying on the floor next to me (which is really rare), but recently, ever since he hit 5 months old, he’s been less hyper (he’s always sitting in one corner staring at nothing , but when I come in to play with him, he’s hyper all over again. He has became more affectionate, not like very affectionate, but he let me pet him longer and he chatter or grind his teeth when I do so. Petting session usually last around 10 to 15 mins but only when he’s in his cage, no where else. He also had been licking my knees, legs, and thighs a lot lately, but no where else. I’m not complaining about this or anything, I was just wondering if this is normal because I read some forums and they said that rabbits get aggressive and territorial when they are not neutered, but Teddy is like the complete opposite. So is this normal? Also, when I neuter him, will he stay like this? I really don’t want him to be so hyper and independent all the time, it makes me so sad no matter how much I spend time with him, he’s not interested in me at all, unless he wants to be, so is that going to change after I get him neutered? He was also very well litter trained, but now, he’s just dropping poops every time he hops (kind of funny lol), I’m just glad his poop isn’t offensive, but he doesn’t pee every where though so that’s the good news. Also, he does like to chase my foot around and making honking noises, which I know it means that he’s wanting to mate, but just thought I put that out if it would be any help.

So yea, I was just wondering if his behaviors are normal because instead of turning more territorial, he’s became more calm and affectionate, but I would like him to be even more affectionate and calm, so would neutering make him calmer and more affectionate? I would really like to have a long time session where I could just pet him and he wouldn’t reject me or just let me pet him when he’s in his cage because his cage is pretty hard to reach in and it’s very tiring.

Thats not overly unusual, some bunnies take longer to get mature. My bunny Sesame, is extremely affectionate, she loves to be petted and held. Sometimes she jumps into your lap and lays next to you so she’ll be petted. if your sitting next to her, sometimes she squashes under your hand to be petted.

Maybe you should wait a bit longer to see if he changes

My 7month old, unneutered male rabbit is not territorial or aggressive either. The only time he will nip me is if I’ve fed him a cranberry and he can still smell it on my fingers – he goes crazy for them! Otherwise, he is a very sweet rabbit. He doesn’t spray and still uses his litter tray. The only issue is that he does pee on my bed, but I’ve heard that is very common. It’s also probably my fault for letting him on there! Every night he will jump up onto my bed for a big snuggle. Just like Seasme, he will head butt my hand when he wants to be petted. It’s very cute! So you’re not the only one who has a sweet unneutered rabbit, don’t worry. As for whether he will stay the same after neutering, I cannot say. I will keep my fingers crossed for you! Neutering him obviously wouldn’t make him more aggressive (I wouldn’t imagine!). You have to remember that some bunnies will be more affectionate than others due to their temperaments and personalities so it could be that this is as affectionate as he will get. I would suggest just putting in lots of time petting (as much as he will allow) and just generally being around him so he feels completely comfortable around you. You’ll find that eventually he will seek you out for a snuggle

I agree. Zorro is very affectionate and the only reason I realised his hormones have kicked in is a big rise in the amount of honking and running around feet and my dad claims he tried to mount his arm. He also seems to act more crazy running around the house like a loon and then sometimes will stay in the kitchen on his own when everyone else is in the living room. I would say he loves being petted and would lie there all day. He’s ok at litter training only pees on the couch and he also does the poo mid hop! He isn’t aggressive or at all territorial.

Though I am getting him neutered in Friday so I can say a bit more then if he changed over the next month. I will post here and give you an account if you like…

Oh by the way Zorro is 20 weeks and 5 days old. So I guess are vets different for the age they will operate?

Okay, thank you so much for replying. I’m getting him neutered on December 23rd because that’s the closest day that the vet has open, hopefully he’ll be okay and a lot calmer after the surgery is done. @Nicolle, it would be really helpful if you keep me updated. Thank you all!

Hi Tedster, as an update he’s doing really well (a week later) and he seems nearly the same the only thing I’ve noticed is that he seems to want to be in his cage more but I will see if this is temporary. He does more binkies and crazy running than ever. So he seems happy. Still gives me bunny kisses and plenty of running around my feet still honking! He has been a bit naughtier than usual too though (he ripped a bit of wallpaper off and is now obsessed with that part of the wall and tries to get to it. I will keep updating.
