Hi guys! I wanted to know what greens you guys feed your buns that they like and are leafy. Mr Binks loves cilantro but seems to be all he will eat. I’ve tried spinach and kale but he just lets it sit there until it shrivels up and I throw it away, I end up eating it instead (not he old shriveled up pieces lol). I want to get him into something that is more leafy that will keep longer (cilantro gets wilted very fast so I can’t buy enough for a whole week). Any thoughts on what your buns eat often and will be easy to buy once a week that will keep better? Thanks!

If you put long pieces of stem-cut cilantro in a jar with water covering the cut ends about an inch, put a plastic bag over it (I just cut the “zipper” part off a ziploc gallon size bag and put it over the cilantro and jar loosely), it will last in the fridge for a couple of weeks. Just change the water if needed.

Pumpkin loves Kale, Spinach, and Romaine for leafy things. I think she would eat romaine all day if we let her. Could give that a shot!

I’ve been told that sometimes bunnies will love something one day and hate it the next…for example there are times that Pumpkin refuses to eat parsley and other times she goes nuts over it. Don’t rule out trying the Spinach and kale again!

              Thanks!
JR: this may sound stupid but do you put the bag over the top of the cilantro to where the bottom of the bag is on the top or do you put the bottom of the bag under the jar and keep the top open?
LLH: thank you, I will try the others again. Is romaine ok to give buns every day or is that something he should have only a few times a week?

Besides the greens already mentioned, you can try parsley, red or green leaf lettuce, collard greens, turnip greens, swiss chard, dandelion greens and carrot tops.

                      Zorro loves watercress so much!

I read a tip to keeping salads fresh for longer online a few weeks back. Wash your salad (or get prewashed) put in a bowl the place a paper towel on top and finally cover with cling film. It really does work!

I just googled cilantro as I thought I’ve never heard of it and everyone’s buns love it. Turns out here in England it’s called coriander and yes, Zorro loves that too!

BinkyMom — the bag goes on upside down so it acts like a little greenhouse (open at the bottom). I bought a couple of mini mason jars for just this kind of thing.

Like Nicole said, you can keep other things fresh a while too. I rinse greens and soak in ice water in a dishpan, spin in a salad spinner, blot dry with paper towels, stack and wrap a couple of paper towels around the stack of greens, put in a ziplop bag, squeeze the air out, and zip shut. I use what I need each day and reclose, squeezing the air out. I’ve never kept past a week and a half because its all used up by then. I’ve used this method for green leaf lettuce, red leaf, romaine, dandelion greens, turnip greens, and dill. I’ve used the jar method for cilantro and parsley.

Basil is the tough one. I tried the jar method (except on the counter since basil doesn’t like to be refrigerated), but it didn’t last very long.

Thank you guys so much! I luckily had some mason jars so I bought cilantro and romaine and will put the cilantro in the jar and try to keep the romaine fresh with the methods you guys suggested I figured at least if he won’t eat the romaine this time around I can eat it lol.

With all herbs I tend to give Zorro the growing ones so there’s no need to try keep fresh as its still alive. I usually get through one plant each week. They cost around £1-£1.50 and I just stick the pot on the floor for him to have a munch (he eats so fast I only give it to him for about 30 seconds). They sell at all supermarkets.

Peter loves his cilantro, too. His favorite leafy green is dandelion. It was one of the first greens he had when he was little and a staple in his diet. Another green he loves is carrot tops. We buy the organic carrots with tops and regrow the tops in a little bowl on the kitchen windowsill. We regrow green-leaf lettuce as well, though I haven’t had as much luck getting those to be big like in the stores. They’re still nice and fresh and help when you can’t get to the market due to schedule upset.

Cottontail — how do you regrow carrot tops?

Nicolle — I tried the little potted growing ones but they just seem to turn black and die. I don’t have a windowsill that gets good sunlight so had them on a sill in my kitchen that has fluorescent lighting (works ok for houseplants). Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

There are lots of veggies you can regrow.  At the moment we just use a little bowl/cup with water to regrow carrot tops and lettuce.  The top of the carrot that most people throw away can be placed in water on the windowsill and it will regrow greens.  It won’t regrow the carrot, but the greens are what we want anyway.

Here’s a link to a couple examples of things you can regrow..  I know you can do bok-choy like lettuce, but haven’t tried it yet.  One day, I will get a proper window planter.

I’ve never tried the indoor growing method for carrot tops in water, but I regrow them outdoors in dirt – either in the ground or in pots. I leave about 1 inch of the carrot, with 1 inch of top attached, and plant the carrot portion in soil.

A lifesaver for me has been placing each green in a ziploc baggie wrapped in a paper towel. It absorbs the extra moisture trapped in the bag and keeps greens greener & fresher for much longer! I just change out the paper towel every 1-2 days depending on how soaked it is. Really works wonders for me.

I feed my buns a variety of greens such as leafy green/red lettuce, romaine, endive, watercress, cilantro, parsley, dandelion greens, and sometimes kale or bok choy.

Repot them as soon as you get home into a slightly bigger pot. It only takes 2 secs.

Also don’t over water. Water when they start going floppy. Don’t water the leaves, water the soil.

Should last a couple of weeks in life but less if your bun eats it all up!
