So Spencer has been really unwell all day not eating, pooping or being his normal happy self. We have been to the vets and they have given him some pain meds and some fluids etc and they have given me some critical care. They said do bring him back in a few hours if he isn’t any better and they would want to do imaging tests to see if there is a blockage and then do surgery if it is bad. But that could be like $2000-$5000 and i just spent all my money on the consult he just had so there is no way i could afford the surgery i have almost nothing left

Any tips would be really appreciated as he is really unwell

I don’t understand why they didn’t x-ray him to start with.

Do you have simethicone? (Baby gas drops)? It’s great for rabbits that have stomach-trouble, helps “grease” the intestines so the contents can move along them easier.

If there is no blockage, you don’t have to have surgery, but you do have to feed CC several times a day, with a syringe, and you must massage his belly. I’ve just been through this with my bunny Yohio. It’s been 2 weeks now, so it can take some time before they get back to their normal selves. It’s very tedious and worrisome.

If you can afford the x-ray and there is no blockage, you can care for him at home.

Most often these things can be handled with CC, simethicone and massages. Read this : http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html (Never mind the part about giving an enema, it’s not exactly for amateurs like us normal bunny-owners I think!) But without an x-ray there’s no way you can tell if there’s blockage or not.

          I understand your despair.

Please report back and keep feeding and massaging him like it says in the article I linked to. Baby gas drops are really great, I must stress that.

Thanks Bam, I have been giving him the baby gas drops and massaging his tummy. If we go back in a few hours they will do the x-ray then. The only reason we didn’t before is they quoted $1500! and don’t even have half of that nor do i have a credit card or anything so i really hope it isn’t a blockage

Oh, ok, an X-ray wouldn’t cost anything near 1500 Aussie dollars in Sweden where I live, I payed the equivalent of 101,45 Aussie dollars for x-rays, dental exam, painkiller and sub q fluids + 2 sachets of CC.

If he’s absolutely no better in a few hours, then it’s bad, but if there is at least some improvement, then there’s hope that you can handle this. Are there any droppings what so ever? Is he the least bit interested in any of his favorite treats? Some leafy greens, herbs? Is he still all hunched up? Does he let you massage his tummy without fighting and kicking? Will he hop around at all? Hopping around is vital for the tummy to start moving. Does he clean himself after feeding-time (generally quite a lot of CC gets on the rabbit and not into the rabbit as it should) – a rabbit cleaning itself is always a good sign.

I do understand what it’s like to be short of money.

No he hasn’t done any droppings at all today except for one small one about 6 hours ago and he won’t eat anything even his favorite things. He is grooming his feet a little bit and wiping his face occasionally. I can massage his tumy he doesn’t like it but he doesn’t hop away.

As I see it, you just have to keep at it. You can give him a little bit of water in the syringe to help hydrate him. How much CC have you managed to get into him?

Did he get any motility-enhancing drug at the vet? (My Yohio didn’t, the vet said simethicone would be enough). I’ve read about people having been recommended lactulose for their rabbit in stasis. Do you have any canned/ mashed pumpkin, that’s often very good (good fibre, palatable) and can get a bunny back to eating on his own.

I hope someone wise and more experienced than I will see this thread soon.

Hi Bam, FB is here in WA not far from me. No canned pumpkin I’m afraid. I steamed and mashed mine through a sieve. Did the vet give you any pain meds FB ?

FB who is your normal vet, I am thinking it might be an idea to go and see them tomorrow or an exotic vet in your area. The UPV’s are notorious for being expensive and you may be able to get further treatment and the xrays much cheaper at Armadale, Warton Road or even TRS.

Also PM Kelly (Victoria Kelly) and see if she can give you a better price for the one she works for. I have her mobile if you want it.

Hey don’t really have a normal vet as they have never really been sick so have only used the unusual pet vets for grooming and sterilization. Tomorrow morning i will ring around our local vets and see if any have any experience/knowledge in this area. I do suspect that Murdoch vets does charge waaay more than anywhere else. Will also keep TRS in mind although would rather not but they are better than no one! Do you think Victoria would mind if i asked her?

She wouldn’t mind at all. Check your FB thread, she has already offered. PMing you her mobile.

I’m sorry your bun is feeling so poorly. Stasis can be a real doozy and you really have to keep at the treatments. Sometime it takes several days for improvement.

I’ve dealt with this many times. The key is pain management and fluids. If you are okay with needles, you could maybe get your vet to show you how to administer fluids with an butterfly catheter. It’s not as hard as it seems, but I suggest you have a helper. Its cheaper and less stress on the bunny for you to do it yourself. During a bad stasis episode with Bindi, I was giving fluids every 4 hours. You really need to keep the bunny hydrated.

Motility drugs can help but you must be certain there is no blockage prior to giving them. If there is, they can cause severe injuries. You need an X-ray to determine a blockage.

Hope your bun is feeling better soon. ((((Spencer))))

I hope he will be ok through the night if i just keep giving him the CC and water. I don’t know what to do

It always is a Sunday or a big holiday when pets get sick =(

You’re doing all you can do, CC, water, simethicone, tummy rubs. It’s a very good sign if he lets you massage his tummy.

                                      (((((Spencer)))))

Also, if he is able, try to get him moving around instead of just sitting still. That seems to help get things moving too.

Hi everyone. We took Spencer too the emergency vet last night as he got worse he stopped swallowing his CC and water and his temp dropped. I just spoke to the vet and she said he has passed a few small poos!!!! (Yay) she said he isn’t out of the woods and he could still get worse but i am taking this as a positive sign! Thanks for everyone’s advice and support through this horrible time i really appreciate it!
