I got my bunny, Roux, a few weeks ago.  Unfortunately, he spends a lot of time in his crate but I let him out for 2 or more hours a day.  I put down some carpet because he doesn’t like the hardwood and I’ve given him some towels to nest and boxes to play with.  He seems pretty happy, but he sometimes jumps a few feet into his cage and turns around quickly, seeming scared.  He will sometimes hop around really fast and then freeze like he is being hunted or something.  I thought that he maybe wanted more space to run around but when I enlarged the area, he didn’t seem to care.

Is this normal? Could this be because he hasn’t been “fixed” yet?  Is there something that I can do to lessen this? (It makes a lot of noise when he jumps in his cage and I don’t want the person living a floor below me to find out I have a bunny.)

        Thank you for your help!

-A worried first time bunny mommy

Generally when bunnies are running around free it is out of happiness that they jump sporadically. I used to have a bunny Trix that I would let outside and he would run around in circles so fast you’d think he was wild. He would do all sorts of zig-zigs and go back and forth then freeze randomly. It was all pleasure. All I can suggest is putting something soft in the cage to lessen the noise like a piece of carpet.

This is not only normal, but as Thump said, a great sign! This behavior is what’s known as a “binky” and is a sign of tremendous happiness. Bunnies will jump sporadically, twist in the air, run quickly in circles, and all kinds of hilarious and adorable things.

As for the cage thing, what exactly is making noise? What kind of flooring does the cage have?
