I’m new to all of this, and I don’t even own rabbits yet although I’ve been doing research and reading up on things and saving to get the essentials before I go to some local shelters and hopefully find a pair of bonded buns to adopt.

While I was reading up on bedding, I am planning on getting the gentle touch for the bulk of the litter, but I’ve seen/heard of people adding a bit of scented things into the litter too. I’m not looking at synthetic things and I also read that some essential oils are bad for animals too because they’re so potent, especially those with sensitive noses. But there’s this national geographic chamomile bedding that has the actual flower buds in it for scent, but not many reviews yet.

I just wanna know, if any and all scented beddings a no-no? Even if its just from the flowers in it?

        Thanks in advance!

My main concern with scented litters for any pet is that most I’ve found tend to be either oils or powders. Oils and powders can be very irritating, and since they stick to your pets feet they get ingested as well, during grooming. Dried flowers that are approved for bunnies are probably the best bet for scenting any litter you get, in my opinion. I have a lavender bedding I top my boxes with from Kaytee that has flowers dried in it for its fresh scent instead of perfumes. It does pretty well for smell and it’s nice and fresh, but not overpowering, when topping off the box or changing it.
I haven’t had any luck with pelleted litters because I have a cat and bunny that are both spoiled rotten and apparently don’t like the feel of it. I know there are a lot of bunny owners that don’t have any issues whatsoever with pelleted bedding, though, so hopefully someone else will be able to give you their opinion on that one.

I agree with cottontail. Unless you know what the scent is made from (rabbit friendly plants) it is best not to use it. Essential oils used in many scents could get on bunny’s fur and into his mouth by grooming. It could be toxic. Also the bunny might not like the smell. My rabbits get angry and thump when given certain flowers. They don’t like the smell.
