Having moved house recently, something in the new house is causing both mine and my mom’s allergies to skyrocket. We don’t know if it’s this batch of hay for the bunnies (Although I doubt it because we were using it at the old house too and we were just fine.) Or if it’s just all the dust that was in this house when we moved in, even though we cleaned up all the dust about a week ago and we’re still sneezing and sniffling ONLY when we’re in the house. But, we’re looking for a good air purifier either way. So what would you suggest if you have or had an air purifier? Thanks in advanced.

Are you certain it’s not seasonal allergies right now? Not sure of an air purifier though…

Does your new house have carpets? If so, my recommendation would be steam clean the carpets then give them a vinegar bath (test your carpets for color damage before you put vinegar on large spots though). Mold under carpets is a great way to get horrible allergy reactions in a house. When my partner spills something on ours, he starts getting stuffy noses and sneezing and coughing and white vinegar on the spot fixes it up.

When I lived in an apartment, we had smoke coming in from our downstairs neighbor. I used the basic honeywell air purifier, like this one http://www.walmart.com/ip/16563547?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0&adid=22222222227010337159&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=40873257152&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=78765652112&veh=sem.

Kept me from wanting to choke (I have a bad reaction to cigarette smoke).

@Sarita it’s only when we’re in our new house, at work and anywhere else we’re just fine.

@stickerbunny We actually tore up all the carpets in our part of the house before moving in and replaced the floors because the carpets were over 20 years old. Although, since the basement is trashed, and the upstairs apartment is trashed, there might be some sort of allergens upstairs or downstairs. We own the building, so we’ll been cleaning and fixing up the basement and upstairs apartment. Still, we’re going to buy a purifier until we have time to start working on everything. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Have you had the ductwork checked? Dust, mold, etc. can accumulate in the ductwork over time.

I was going to mention cigarette residue too!

Also, I do wonder whether wallpaper harbours allergens. It might be on my mind tho as just spent yesterday removing some. Where I live, every room was wallpapered in the eighties sometime. Even the kitchen, bathroom and toilet!

I agree a purifier will be a good investment!
I know it’s come up on the forums before. So if you put this

                  site:binkybunny.com purifier

in a search engine, you’ll find some threads that they’ve been discussed.

Nah, we lived next to the people for as long as I can remember, they’ve NEVER smoked. But after some investigation, it might be the mildew/possible mold in the basement. I was down there with my dad for less than 2 minutes with a dust mask on and I had an asthma attack. Thanks everyone though.
