I always take Fitch with me to my parents house over the Christmas week. They used to only live a 5 minute car journey away…now however they are a good 2 and a half hours away!

I want to take Fitch with me again this year but am worried such a long journey will stress him out. I have seen you can get a natural relaxant/sedative thing that you put in their drinking water, would that help? Or am i worrying for nothing? He is 5 years old

I haven’t heard of the relaxant you are talking about but I think he could do fine with the drive. You can talk with your vet about the relaxant and see what they say about that. I would just make sure they are comfortable during the drive.

car rides generally aren’t very fun for bunnies and they tend to get stressed out. however, given that you aren’t doing these a lot, a 2 hour drive isn’t too bad to be honest

That makes me feel a bit better then. It will be a journey each way with about a 10 day gap in between.

I think the effects would be various depend on the personality of your bunny.. For my bunny, I took him home when he was 2 months old, it was public transportation.. much noisier than a car.. and we transfer from bus to subway.. a long distance took us one hour.. and he was absolutely good when he got home.
Even I was surprised.. maybe he’s just a tough boy

So I don’t think it will be a problem when a rabbit sitting in private car, with a familiar person and having a comfort carrier.

Anyway, I agree with Sindriona about asking a vet.. relaxant should be unnecessary but it can be a backup in case…

if you need to, you can stop for a bit and give the bunny a break after an hour or so of driving. Maybe give some water or some fresh veggies to chomp on before resuming the trip. IN my experience, the bunny doesn’t really eat anything while traveling, they just shake in terror (its actually quite heartbreaking to watch). I have a little bungalow for the bun to hide in but make sure you have something that she can pee in because they usually pee when you start driving lol

2 1/2 hours is a long drive, but not super long. The biggest danger with long car rides is in the summer b/c of the heat, winter is a very safe time to travel.

As far as calmness goes try to choose a time of day when you bunny is most relaxed and generally just chills out, like midday if at all possible.
