Last Thursday night I noticed my 6.5 year old mini rex, Benny hadn’t pooped all day. He had a small bout of stasis back in May, but the home remedies started to work a bit by the time we got to the vet. Researching it prior to the vet visit last time I discovered I was probably giving him too many pellets (he eats Purina Fibre 3), and voiced my concerns to the vet, but was told that since it was resolved and he had been used to his diet, I shouldn’t change anything. Anyway, I called the vet I usually go to, but they couldn’t see him and referred me to the other town vet to see him the following morning. I rushed to the store to pick up pineapple juice, infant’s simethicone, pedialyte, and pureed pumpkin. I gave him the simethicone and tried to syringe feed him the other stuff but he’s very stubborn and the only syringe I had couldn’t go far enough back in his mouth so he had to drink it. He also ate lots of parsley which I drizzled a very small amount of olive oil on since that was what got him going again last time. Early the next morning there were still no poops, and I took him straight to the vet and they wanted to monitor him for a few hours. They gave him fluids and Metacam (plus 0.5mL for the following morning. That vet said he thought he had had diarrhea and was just emptied out, which I didn’t buy since he had been eating just fine, but had nothing coming out. He told us to not give him any pellets until he was better, but grind some up with baby food to syringe feed him.  That night, there were a few really tiny misshapen poops in his litterbox, but our vet friend didn’t agree with the other vet’s treatment plan and came to our house to give him a look. She gave us subcutaneous Buprenorphine (0.3mL) and oral Metoclopramide (0.3mL) to give him twice daily throughout the weekend. She also had us get him vegetable baby foods to syringe feed him which he started to fight less. I also gave him water in a syringe since I didn’t notice him drinking anything. I gave him lots of fresh kale, parsley, mixed greens, and carrot tops, which I soaked in a plate of water to try and get more water in him. He spent a lot of the weekend in his litterbox, and seemed to be straining a lot. His poops gradually became more frequent, but were still small, dark and misshapen (they got a little bigger each day, but still not normal). On Sunday and Monday he was squeaking (the only way I can think of describing it) a little whenever he strained in the litterbox and had been dribbling a little pee. I called the vet again and she told me to give him the extra Metacam and bring him in the next day. Last night I also caught him trying to eat a pellet from his litterbox, and figured it was because he hadn’t had any pellets in several days and had been used to having them. I gave him a teaspoon or two (just a tiny bit in the palm of my hand) to try and discourage him from eating litter pellets, and he gobbled them up so fast. I felt bad that he was so hungry even though he has had fresh veggies every morning and night, as well constant access to hay (my whole house is a mess there’s hay everywhere ).  This morning there was a good amount of new poops in his litterbox, and they were close to normal size, but slightly misshapen still, dark, and fairly moist. I took him to the vet this afternoon (not the one that thought he had diarrhea) and she prescribed him more Buprenorphine (0.3mL) and Metoclopramide (0.3mL) for the next two days. She said the moist poops were probably due to the baby food and had me stop syringe feeding him (which he is very happy about). She also got a small urine sample, and said she saw a little blood in it. She said she’d look at it more closely under a microscope and call me with what she finds, but doesn’t feel comfortable adding antibiotics right away. I should mention that he’s pretty much been acting himself, just is in the litterbox a lot. Are UTIs common after GI Stasis? Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?

I think that perhaps a UTI could be the cause of stasis – did either vet do an xray or check his teeth? Stasis is a condition that is brought on from something else…it shouldn’t just happen, there is a reason although it’s not always easy to determine.
