Hi Everyone! I haven’t posted in awhile and was going to update today with some new pics of Simba enjoying a wheatgrass patch I got him from a farmers market yesterday. But I also wanted to ask a health question so I figured I’ll just ask the question first in the Q&A.

I’ve noticed these darker patches of fur on Simba’s ears for maybe a month and at first was just thinking he was getting a new coat of fur since Simba went through somewhat of a shed (but it wasn’t a molt like I’ve seen in pics where the whole coat comes off) about 2 months ago. But it’s staying in patches so now I’m wondering if there might be a problem instead? Any past experiences or speculations would be appreciated ~ thanks*! =)

Did you check the skin under there to see if it looks different? Irritated, scaly, bumpy, etc.?

          How old in Simba now?

Thanks LBJ – Simba is 1.5 yrs old now and the skin around as well as under looks normal without any dry skin or anything irritated that I can notice/feel. Also in case it helps to clarify, the light areas around the darker patches are not balding but just his original shade that looks bald compared to the darker fur that’s growing in patches.

The reason I asked about his age is because his “adult” coloring could be showing. If the fur is simply a different color, there is no sign of disease, and it’s all the same length/texture (i.e. not molting) then is it possible that he is simply developing spots on his ears? Perhaps he is supposed to have spots. LOL Bunnies do change in color and pattern as they grow into adults. They don’t look the same as they did when they were babies. Would 1.5 years be pushing it?

Whenever I see bunnies with dark noses and ears I’m reminded of Siamese cats, which do get darker with age. I remember we had a Siamese named Cinnamon that had a creamy main coat when he was young, but by the time he was 15 he was almost completely chocolate colored. I’m curious if that is the same with bunnies with this point-type coloring?

Sigh… that makes sense since the darker fur around his nose has expanded since he was a baby… but I just didn’t think he’d be an “adult” so soon! I’m not sure if it’s just the color perception, but the darker fur does seem a little longer than the light areas… same texture though.

But as long as it seems there’s no health concern attached, I’ll just have to deal as bun-mom to accept that baby’s growing up =P

Thanks LBJ and Cottontail for your input!

it looks like your bun has shed the baby fur color and is getting the adult color. I know how you feel, my bun did the same too. Her pretty light brown got darker and her face became black
