Forum HOUSE RABBIT Q & A Can my rabbit remember me after 4 months?

I moved to another country, and because of some problems I am forced to leave my rabbit back at my apartment for 4 months before I can move him here. Later on I decided to cut this period in half by visiting him for a couple of days after 2 months have passed (then leaving again).

        My questions are,

Could my rabbit possibly still remember and like me or 4 months is too much for their memory? Could he be too offended or angry if he remembers me?

By visiting him in the middle of the period am I making this better or worse? Maybe worse because he will remember me then think I left him again?

PS: I’ve been his main caretaker since he was 3 months old to his age now, 1 year and 9 months (so 18 months).

PSS: He’s still living in his default area and being well taken care off by the rest of my family, whom he recognizes as well, so I didn’t carelessly leave him.

If you leave him alone for 2-4 months, I personally don’t think he would remember you very well. I mean, I think he may know who you are, but he would defiantly not run up to you and kiss you like a dog would.

Probably not, but don’t hold that against him :~) Just work on re-establishing your relationship.

I’m sure he’ll remember you. There might be a grudge to be held though. He will like get over it in time and warm up to you again.

That’s tough to have to be away from him so long, but how kind of your family to step up and take care of him when you can’t!

Try not to stress yourself about this too much. You do what you need to to get yourself settled, and when it’s time for him to come back with you, you’ll fall into your regular pattern again and he’ll forget you were ever gone… 🙂

                  Update:
If anybody is curious to know, it’s been 2 months and I’m in my half-way visit.
First thing he did was standing up for food like he usually does, he responded to my old hand signal for food and let me pet him, but there was something definitely different with him. I’m not sure if he totally forgot me and he’s just a bit friendly to strangers or if he’s offended or holding a grudge.
I spent a lot of the day doing things like giving him treats, petting him, and mostly cleaning his cage area which I used to do everyday. He started running to me whenever he sees me like he used to do, but again I’m not sure if he slightly remembered me or just realized I’m a “good person”.

The worst thing is I still have to leave again for over a month. It’s also a bit heartbreaking to think like the 18 months he spent with me have never happened.

This has lately been my concern, too I might have to move to another city for my further studies and live in a hostel. I might have to leave her under my family’s care for 2-3 months till I find a landlord who’d allow me to keep a pet in the hostel. I can understand your disappointment. *sigh*

I kind of regret not leaving a piece of clothing in his area, this is the only thing I would recommend you to do.
I’m trying to refresh his memory right now and will leave one for the next period..

I know it’s hard, but just remember that a few months is only a small fraction of his lifetime… Things will be back to normal soon.

                            Thanks for the support guys.

Well, it’s been a few days and I can say I think he actually remembers me, he started grooming me a lot and acting just like he used to, so maybe he was holding a grudge for a few days. I still have to leave again, which is sad, but maybee he won’t forget me until I take him back.
