I often see pictures of people with their rabbit outside. I’m wondering why the rabbit don’t run away? I always see the rabbit just sitting still or playing. I feel that hopscotch would run like he does inside.

I’m always super baffled by people who seemingly allow their rabbits outdoors with absolutely no containment, also. I am sure this is how many rabbits end up lost.

I admit I do take Bun Bun out when it’s nice outside for a bit of fresh air or if he needs to potty. That probably sounds weird but every couple hours I take him outside to go potty because I’m too lazy to go upstairs and to his cage and it requires me to pick him up which he doesn’t mind (I think he actually likes it) but since there’s no sure-fire way of telling, I’d rather not. Anyways, I open the door and he usually just follows me to my backyard and nibbles on grass then potties while I watch him like a hawk and stand by him at all times. Then, he goes to the door and waits till I open it to get in. Bun Bun is really chill and he’ll hop around but he won’t zoom past me and under my fence so I trust him (obviously not without my supervision.) He also prefers to stay inside so I don’t really take him out for playtime; he usually just hops back to the door and paws at it until I open it. People take their rabbits out for a few seconds for photos only, too. I can’t speak for others but I let Bun Bun out with no containment because he never wants to stay outside and always hangs by the door and to the grass nearest the door so I can trust him.

I have to wonder if some of those pictures are staged.

I would never take my rabbits outside – frankly they are scared when I have tried so I just keep them inside and when the weather is nice I open windows…Bobby’s too short to see outside the windows but he likes the fresh air.

When I first got my rabbit I was obsessed with taking the bun outside. My priority was to give her some fresh air and an area to romp around in. However, after doing some research and getting some feedback, i’ve decided for myself that taking them outside is not something I wanted to do anymore.

To me, too many risks such as predators, finding an appropriate leash, change in diet, potential bugs or mites, and raccoon poop to name a few

Usually those outdoor areas are fenced in.

I used to take Porky out for fresh air and stuff, and would just put up a little fenced in area. I haven’t been taking him out lately, b/c a warren of wild rabbits has moved in behind our garage, and I don’t want Porky picking up anything from them.

There are so many risks. I’m not really opposed to people having their rabbits outside to play with proper precautions, but unfortunately so many of the dangers are unseen. I have always chosen to just not risk it.

Personally though, i would be way too nervous to have my bun outside without any containment at all. I think she’d take off… :-\ Even fences can have small openings that they might squeeze through before you can stop them.

I’m with Beka. One strange noise and bunny will run for cover right through the fence and into the danger zone.

When my best friend had a rabbit, she would take him outside all the time! He was such a good boy and stayed in the yard. He would follow her and her mother all around the yard and would chase after balls. I feel like as parents, we can be a little too paranoid. Just make sure there aren’t any plants that would be harmful to his/her health and just keep a very close eye out.
