Hello. Last night we had a major storm here with really loud thunder and constant lightning. Was soothing my bunny on my lap because she was scared. At one stage she panicked and tried to run away and in doing so scratched me thru my clothing and I have several sctratches on my belly and a couple broke the skin but only just. Applied disinfectant and isocol etc to clean the scratches. Does anyone know if I should be concerned? Ive read online a tetanus shot is recommended but is that going too far? She is a clean domestic bunny, not wild and has no health issues. Many thanks!

I wouldn’t worry. If your bunny is living in a clean well maintained environment there should not be any nasties about to infect the wounds and bunnies don’t really carry any diseases that would harm humans.
I have had lots of scratches and some pretty spectacular bites with out any detrimental affect. They are not like cats and dogs which can and do carry bacteria etc that can make humans sick.

I agree with Roberta that you probably have nothing to worry about. It’s most likely no worse than getting yourself with your own nail (which I have done many times, sadly).
I’ve fallen prey to bunny scratches myself lately, as Peter likes to bounce on the bed–even if we’re still in it–and accidentally ran over my arm last night. Now I have a nice long pair of bunny scratches just in time for his vet visit today.

As a bunny owner, don’t be surprised if you get scratched from time to time. I know I’m bound to get at least one good one at nail trim time. I’ve also gotten a few bites — bonding session with my three, once from my single bun the first time she saw the baby lops, and even twice by little Marlee when my hand smelled like carrots and when I didn’t move out of her way after a couple of head butts! So far, no ill effects.
