Hey! I’m a new time bunny owner, I’ve had my baby boy Goober for about a week now and recently he’s just been flopping over and laying like a dog, it doesn’t last very long only about a minute. I read somewhere that when they do that, they’re sick? I’m quite nervous. I’m currently in the process of looking for a rabbit savvy vet in our town so he can be fixed.

(Also if anyone would love to share tips for first time bunny owners, I would very much appreciate it!<3 )

That is definitely a happy bunny flop. I’ve never seen a sick rabbit do a flop.

I would recommend that you read the following links to help you and of course if you have any specific questions, please post them.

Totally second Sarita. Happy bunnies flop like that. Unhappy/sick bunnies tend to hunch up/ huddle. The sight of a flopped bunny is often very scary though because it looks like a dead bunny. Check if there are breathing movement of the chest/belly A flopping bunny will un-flop if you cry out or poke it and that’s rather a shame.

Because rabbits are prey animals their instinct is to be on the defensive. The harder it is for them to get up and run means that they are more comfortable and safe. So if they are flopped out it means that they are very happy and comfortable. It’s really a cute thing to witness

Yep, totally agree. There is the thing they do when they press their bellies on the floor and shift their movement and seem like they can’t quite get comfortable – that is a sign of gas or another issue, and if it’s a real problem, they will refuse their favorite foods/treats. If you become familiar with their behavior and watch them like a hawk, it should be fairly evident when something’s wrong.

But yes. Bunny flops are happy sights, even when they do ye olde dead bunny flop, which looks rather like this.
