I’m not sure this is the right place for this but just needed some advice we had our indoor male rabbit neutered 10 days ago and the vet said it would be safe to introduce him to our female after a week as we’ve been keeping them seperate, anyway last night we let them both loose in our front room but he got so excited he started pooping everywhere he then tried to mount her, I kept removing him and put my arm round her to stop him doing it but he bit my arm really hard, he’s nibbled me gently before but never anything like this, it really really hurt, anyway not sure what’s going on as he’s normally such a docile bunny my hopes were that they would eventually become best friends that could run around and play together but at the moment this seems impossible, any advice or does anyone know why he did this ? We had them both in neutral territory and she kept trying to push her head underneath him like she wanted to be close to him but he was desperate to mount her, and he wasn’t paticularly fussy about which end he was trying to hump either, will they ever be able to play nicely together?

Well you have to actually introduce your rabbits to each other and bond them – he still needs time for his hormones to calm down and you must have your female spayed as well before introduction.

One session does not a bonding make :~) Rabbits need to learn to trust each other – read through the bonding forum on proper ways to introduce rabbits once both are altered. Unfortunately it’s not just a matter of putting two rabbits together in hopes they will fall in love right away.

I suspect he bit you because you wouldn’t let him do what he wants and you had the female in the same room.

Your vet is terribly wrong! As Sarita said, his hormones need time to calm down, at least for a month after his neuter. Also, he can still impregnate her within that time frame. I don’t know if your female is spayed, but if not, he might have already done the deed as he did get a chance to mount her. It just takes a second.

Both rabbits need to be fixed before trying to bond them, as their hormones make their behavior unpredictable. Until they have both been done, keep them completely separate.

He definitely didn’t get her pregnant as the end he was trying to mount wasn’t the right end lol bless him 😀 I haven’t had her done yet as she’s only 11 weeks and the vet asked me to wait till shes a little bigger, apart from that one time we have kept them seperate and doing 3 hourly shifts of them being out of the hutch, I so cannot wait till they can both come out together, as we have a 2 tier hutch we have been alternating who goes at the top each night so that they’re getting used to each other’s smell, so hopefully they will gradually get used to each other
