Does anyone have feedback on Oxbow brand Natural Science Supplements?  I was debating on purchasing some for my bunny who has been letting out urine sludge and oxalate crystals.  He is a two year old bunny and has a healthy diet of Cilantro, Romaine lettuce small scoops of adult pellets and unlimited hay but it does not seem to help.  I am just a mother that constantly worries about her baby :-/  lol

         Any advice would be useful

I used the Oxbow Natural Science Joint Support Tablets for a few months on one of my older bunnies who was getting crippled (among his other ailments). I really don’t know if they helped or not, but my bunny did enjoy them as a treat and I thought that the ingredients were healthy and possibly helping him so I continued with them up until he passed away.

Some rabbits just have urine sludge no matter what their diet is. Why don’t you go ahead and try the urinary support tablets and see if you notice any difference in your rabbit? Hopefully, they will help, and will be a treat that your rabbit looks forward to.

Love them. To be honest though, I agree with tobyluv, I really didn’t see a difference, but I only feed him the Digestive and Urinary ones at the moment. I mean, he hasn’t had gas for a while and has had no problems! I say get them, even if you don’t need them, lol. Although I am a fan of all things oxbow and nearly had a heart attack when I saw them on the shelf, haha. Your rabbit seems very spoiled… but in the good way!

Why do you suspect your rabbit has urine sludge?

Thank you everyone for your responses!!! It does look like a great treat!!! sorry to hear that bunny passed

Kinako has let out some grey/ beige looking clay discharge I checked it online and it looked really similar to urine sludge. I also talked to my vet about it, he poops urinates regularly and keeps very active, she said that I should lower his calcium intake. But I have noticed that when I feed him certain brands of hay (American pet brand) he let’s out chunks of oxalates!!! It’s weird, the ingredients are 100% Timothy hay!!?!?

Here is a very good article on bladder stones and sludge…worth reading if you have not:

                  http://rabbit.org/bladder-stones-and-bladder-sludge-in-rabbits/

This is in particular in the article talks about diet:

Diet high in digestible calcium? For many years, veterinarians have believed that dietary calcium content was important in the development of bladder stones and sludge. For this reason, and because so much about this condition is not known, we have emphasized dietary changes directed toward reducing calcium intake for affected rabbits. Based on what we now know, it can be stated that dietary changes alone will NOT reduce the formation of stones or sludge in rabbits prone to this condition. Several scientific studies in which rabbits were fed huge amounts of digestible calcium for months (far more than a pet rabbit would ever get even on a completely commercial diet) have demonstrated that these rabbits failed to develop stones or sludge. So I don’t believe that diet ALONE is ever the entire problem.

Thanks!!!! This is a great article!!!! I noticed that Kinako hasn’t been drinking as much water lately. There is a suggestion to flavor the water, I will probably try to add a few drops of Honey to his water. thank you so much for your input.
