I’ve had my bunny now for almost 3 weeks and he is already litter trained other than a few stray poops in his cage…but no pee outside of litter box which is really all I care about. Since I’ve had him I’ve been using an off brand of carefresh that’s soft and still quite expensive and the only reason I was using that is because it came free with his cage. When I bought his cage I also bought extra supplies such as food, hay, and litter. The litter is All Living Things- Premium Rabbit Litter and it has good reviews…but right when I put it in his litter box he ate a few pieces of it.. The bag it’s in says it’s safe for a rabbit to eat a little bit but if they stop eating or drinking or pooping call a vet immediately so does this mean it’s really not safe? He only ate a few pieces and I yelled at him a bit to not do it and even covered it with hay but I’m still worried..it does kind of look like his food so could he have just got confused?

I used to use aspen bedding in Bun Bun’s litter then switched him to the Yesterday’s News Paper based Cat Litter and the first minute I put it in he ate a few pieces. I’m assuming because it looks so similar to his pellets but they smell completely different? Not sure but he soon figured out that it was litter and tasted gross and that it was definitely NOT pellets. If you notice him eating some again, I’d keep an eye on him but if it’s 100% paper based then it shouldn’t be a big deal

Then he should be good unless he eats a large amount. Have you noticed him eating any more?

I have not noticed him eating any more of it. I did notice him put a piece in his mouth, chew on it a bit, and then spit it out which was a weird sight but I guess that was him realizing that it wasn’t food lol

I’ve never used anything but Carefresh because the pelleted litter looked like food. Always wondered if they’d eat it anyway! I’d be curious if your bunny is through nibbling on it or continues to eat some.

Pelleted paper litters are totally fine if eaten in small quantities. Like JackRabbit said, if the bunny eats a lot of it, you may want to look into other litters, or consider getting a litterbox screen.

As long as he doesnt eat much he should be fine, i use woodstove pellets and he doesnt eat them and 1 bag costs 5$ and it lasts 1-2 months, and when it gets wet it turns into sawdust (but it wont mess with the rabbits respiratory system) grats on your bun! Im a newish rabbit owner too, good luck!
