**UPDATE** – Bonnie has eaten hay, drank water (her mouth was sooo dry), walked and baby hopped around a little.  She hopped about 15 feet and made a pit stop in the community litterbox, and proceeded to the kitchen (her favorite room).  She then went next to her pen and laid out and is currently inside flopped to the side.  She’s definitely sore, but she seems to be in a good state, all things considered.  Thanks everyone for the positive vibes!

So we took Bonnie to get spayed this morning, they wouldn’t let me pick her up early, even though arrangements were made when I made the appointment because of the long ride and added stress.  SO I had to wait until 4 to get her.  I did manage to get her to nibble on a little kale before leaving the hospital.  It’s a 2 1/2 hr ride, and I wanted to see if I could get anything in her, because of the long ride making it more stressful.

What really has me upset… they would not give me pain meds for her.  They told me the injectible they gave her would last about 12 hours.  She’s definitely withdrawn and has no interest in eating anymore.. though she did eat another few very small pieces of kale when she went into her pen at 6:30pm, she peed in her litterbox, and she went to her corner and there she sits.  She has also eaten 3 raisins, but definitely not enthusiastically.

I know she’s hurting, with good reason, but at what point should I get concerned?  I mean… I don’t expect her to eat normally so soon, of course, but how long should I give her before I need to press the issue?  Any idea on how little and infrequent nibbling will be enough to keep her from going into stasis?  Do I only need to keep an eye on poops to be sure it’s simply still moving?  SHould I be trying to syringe feed her water?  I mean it’s only been about 12 hrs since her surgery, so it’s still very early, but with my distance to my rabbit vet, I need to be sure I give myself enough time to act.

I have critical care here just in case and I am going to try to call my local non-rabbit savvy vet to see if I can convince him to prescribe some metacam for a few days, even though he doesn’t do rabbits at all.

Oh manic! All that excitement of having Bonnie spayed has turned into concern, I’m sorry!
I know there’s no need for me to tell you that I have NO idea….. You know I’m only here to tell you that I’m thinking of you both and I’m sorry this wasn’t as easy going as you had hoped.

I will say though, I got Metacam from my vet for one of my dog’s over the counter. Can you go to your local vet and say you need some for either Outlaw or Bandit???

Waiting anxiously to know how Bonnie goes…..

I can’t believe they didn’t send any home with you. All three of mine (two different vets) came home with pain meds — the girls 3 days “required” and another few days worth “if needed”; Moshi’s was 1 day “required” and a couple more days worth “if needed”.

I know I’m a worry wart but I’d be calling the local vet and try to get the pain med even if only to have it if she needs it. I’m sure she’ll be ok as long as she’s eating something, peeing, and pooping, but I believe in at least being comfortable while getting over the surgery “hump”.

Thanks Andi, I appreciate it. I’m not sure, honestly, my dog vet is pretty cool and he knows me pretty well. I used to work art a vet hospital about 20 yrs ago, so even though my information is dated, for what I’ve had to discuss with him, he knows I’m no fool. I’m almost banking on that fact and with him taking my word that it’s needed. Hearing that your vet uses it for dogs too gives me a little hope. I really hope it’s something he’d have on-hand. That would be great!

Right now I’m exhausted and need sleep, but I’m a little scared to sleep right now, not that I’d be able to do anything if something happened. bleh!

Thanks JR. Well, I managed to tempt her into eating a piece of kale larger than my hand.. so I feel a little better. I wet it up really well and held it for her while she munched away. She still hasn’t moved, since she settled in that spot, but I’ll take it! I knew it wasn’t gonna be easy, I told myself I wasn’t going to over-react or freak out too soon. I discovered that’s impossible. lol

robyn, I definitely understand! I hope your girl comes through like a champ! I really wish the clinic that did the spay would have helped me out with pain meds. I really can’t understand how any vet that understands rabbit anatomy and physiology would REFUSE to give pain meds after such a surgery. Especially with how quickly they can die rather simply because they refuse to eat because they are in pain. It boggles my mind… it was all I could do not to go on a manic tirade at the entire staff standing in front of me.

You did well manic – good luck to the staff if you had to have a tirade, ha ha ha!

Hey, did you know I only had the Metacam at home because of Molly (toy poodle) for his pain relief in the last couple of weeks of his life, and then was given another bottle when we chose to bring Frank home after he went lame and they wanted thousands to investigate further??? When Henry was neutered, I had a bottle sitting in my pantry and I didn’t even know I could use it on him/for a rabbit? Luckily Henry didn’t need it (cause I didn’t know I could give him any). To think I have a bottle sitting here, and you need some and don’t (if only I could fly my bottle over to you?) – I sooo hate that!
I’m confident with your relationship with your vet and your past experience that he would give you some. He doesn’t need to be a bunny expert to have common sense and compassion.

I know your tired and worried, but it’s great that Bonnie has eaten a little of something, so try and get some sleep. If she is still struggling in the morning, go get the Metacam, and curse (only, lol!) the vet that neglected your Bonnie!

Have two exotics vets here in Sydney and asked about this. Neither gets the decision to not provide pain meds. Irresponsible was the word used by one. I’m so sorry you are going thru this. (((Bonnie))). Poor little thing to go thru this. Hope things look better in the morning for you both.

Do try to get at least some sleep. A tired bunny mum can’t be a good thing. (((((Vibes))))) Keep us updated.

Thank you everyone. I did get a few hours sleep. Bonnie feels a little better this morning. When I went to her pen and called to her she got up and came over to me for nose pets, then awkwardly walked over to her litterbox, slowly and carefully hopped inside and nibbled on some hay. Looks like we’re maybe in the clear, but still keeping fingers crossed with positive vibes all around!

I am outraged on your behalf. What the heck is wrong with that place. I, too, worked for a vet many moons ago and pain relievers were really getting popular at that time(about 12 years ago). So what is their problem?

I have recently learned that willow provides some pain relief. Probably too late by now, as she may have already rounded the bend, shut if you have willow it would be worth a try, though I suspect you’ve tried all the tricks by now.

i understand your frustration. But even though they should have sent some home with you, there is a reason they keep the pain meds a little limited, if the rabbit doesn’t feel any pain, she is danger of accidentally over-acting and ripping out her stitches or seriously hurting herself. Good vets keep it so the bunny is fairly comfortable, but you must understand they need her to feel a little uncomfortable so she doesn’t hurt herself. it will pass in a few days. However, they should definitely have given you some to take home.

MB – I’m very new to rabbits, so I didn’t know about that with willow, thanks!

MK – Yea, I agree abut pain needing to be somewhat of a part with animal recovery, since we can’t explain to them why they need to be careful. Pain-free definitely not a good idea. My initial freaking out about it mostly was because of how far I am from veterinary care for rabbits. With how quickly they can decline and even die because they are in so much pain that they refuse to eat, I was wanting to be prepared and be able to take the edge off to give her the best chance at recovery. I’m totally in agreement that they should have given me something too. lol

Thankfully she’s bounced back really well. She’s eating much better, pellets included. She’s also getting a bit of cabin fever and shuffling back and forth along the doorway of her pen, in hopes that we will let her out.

So.. we let her out briefly. Hubby was really happy to see her hopping around.. me… not so much. She’s nearly back to her usual antics. She hopped up onto Outlaws perch that is under my desk (it comes up to my knees) and he hates that, so he immediately jumps down and went looking for refuge. She eventually spotted him on the hubby’s lap and contemplated hopping from the floor up to the end table to get to the chair, but I spotted that action and stopped her from doing that. Since we have wood flooring, when the rabbits try to run quickly from a dead stop, their feet will slip. Saw her trying to get ready to run… periscoping and stretching up as far as possible to get into other no-no’s, so herded her back to her pen. Yea.. Ms Bonnie is feeling much better.

Soon I’ll be posting in the bonding section for some advice on how to start with my setup!
