I’m new here. I have a bunny named Luna who is 2 years old. We are from Michigan. I am also vegan and would really love to connect with other vegan or vegetarian bunny owners!

Hi breanna! Awww, look at Luna – so cute! I know of 2 member’s that are vegetarian/vegan and lot’s more who would love to be, but can’t quite get there…. Me? I am careful of what food I buy, for example free range egg’s, chicken, etc., I am big on quality of life. Not that I expect that makes up for it, but at least I make an effort as I know a lot of us do here on BB, I hope that counts for something???

Welcome! And I hope you contribute to all the forums and become a long time member. We are about bunny’s here, but have lots of fun too!
            Cheers breanna.

Welcome to the forum! Luna is beautiful. I’m still labeling myself as a vegetarian despite the fact that I eat vegan.

LEL, I thought I’d miss cheese much more than I actually do. Cheese was actually the first thing I gave up, but that’s mainly because I’m lazy and couldn’t be bothered to find out if it contained animal rennet or not. lol

I am vegetarian, I live in an area that has no alternative dairy items beyond soy and almond milk so not been able to try vegan. It’s hard to give up butter, cheese, ice cream etc completely!

I’m a vegetarian. I posted about this when I was new to the forum and had expected that most pet bunny owners would be veg*ns, but we seem to still be out numbered.

Bunnies seem to me the logical pet for veg*ns. We especially wanted a pet our son could share food with, since it seems like a natural part of childhood.

I’m vegetarian too. It took me quite a while to finally stop eating meat altogether. Where I come from meat, especially pork, is a huge part of cooking, probably because it’s so cold there in winter. I don’t eat fish either. I am very careful to check anything I buy or eat is animal meat/fat free. I couldn’t be vegan though, I could live without milk and cheese as I don’t have them that often anyway but I like eggs too much.

I could probably be a vegetarian, my husband just wouldn’t go along with it. So that would make it pretty hard. If I take my lunch to work, I usually don’t have meat in it anyway. I could never be vegan though. I absolutely love cheese way too much. LOL I guess when you think about it, I had to get over the whole vegetarian thing because of where I work (if I hadn’t gotten over it already). I have to prepare food for and feed raptors. You do not what to know some of the crazy things I have had to “portion” out.

I suppose rabbits would be a good choice for someone who is vegan and looking for a pet. That way they wouldn’t be trying to force an unnatural diet onto a dog or cat. I mean, dogs are obviously more omnivorous than cats. A cat is a true carnivore, so they have to have meat in their diet.

Anyway, I guess that that doesn’t mean someone who is not a vegetarian/vegan would not want a rabbit as a pet. Look at all of the BBers here that will happily eat a cow or chicken, but not a rabbit.

I just realised….. Henry is a carnivore! (he’s sneaks dog food) DAM bunny!

And so true LBJ! When I decided (forever ago) that I wanted a bunny for a pet, the last thing that came to my mind was my diet?
Now that I think about it – when I do the veggies for dinner I have a plate out to put the scraps on for Henry. After dinner, it’s nothing for us to put our plates on the floor for the dog’s to eat the leftover’s. And when we had Fred (lorikeet/bird) we always bought fruit (I love my veggies, for some reason I’m not keen on fruit???) and my hubby and son were able to indulge. If anything, our pets just elaborated our diet.
A good example – Kale! I never heard of it till I got Henry and have since heard it is great for us. I am yet to try it, but am determined to include it my next salad. YUM??? Lol…..

People who try to force a veg*n lifestyle onto a cat, or any carnivore, should not be ‘owning’ a carnivorous animal. Dogs are omnivores and if done correctly can be happy and healthy on a veg*n diet. For some dogs, it is the healthier option. But in the end, the dog’s health has to come first. I’d be more comfortable if Tribble was on a veggie kibble, but she has a very sensitive stomach and needs a very basic dog food so I’m feeding her Blue Basics. If she’s happy and healthy then I feel like I’m doing my job as proper pet slave.

Ox is supposed to be my co-veggie but if he has access to dog food or finds a bit of kibble on the floor that I missed, he’ll snarffle that up AND want more!

FLR, that’s how I feel right now with veganism. I’m eating and living as a vegan, but I don’t label myself as one. But that’s because I know that as soon as I label myself vegan I won’t go back. Right now, if I want to have a bit of pumpkin pie, I still feel like I can eat some pumpkin pie (which I did and discovered in the process that dairy tastes really sour to me now. I used to think pumpkin pie/whipped cream was so creamy delicious but now it just tastes sour.)

Anyway, I’m really happy that there are so many veggie folk on here! I’m also really happy that the omnis on here are all so friendly.

LBJ10 – my partner isn’t vegetarian and still eats meat when he wants to, I’d never make him stop. It is probably easier for us because we only eat together once a day as we work different shifts. But when we do eat together, even when he cooks, it’s vegetarian. He’s good like that. The only thing I insist on is shopping cruelty free but he got used to it now and always looks for the buav logo whatever he buys You are right though – rabbits are perfect animals for veggies.

For me, it’s not even cruelty free, I am big on quality of life! I get that animals are bred, born and raised to provide for us, and most countries (like Australia) are insistent that those are killed humanely (not long ago Australia put a ban on transferring our live cattle to Indonesia due to inhumane slaughter and as much as our farmer’s were outraged due to lost income, I agreed and supported it). But I’m all for quality, and I don’t even buy the free range statement anymore. I read the fine print where it states – eg. these chickens are let out to graze freely everyday and are put back in a barn at night. I got caught out with the general free range advert – they were stuck in a barn as to a cage – so not happy!

And I just want to put it out there – all my pets are perfect for me and I am perfect for them! Again, my diet never came into the equation when deciding on a pet. We just knew what they needed and as a responsible pet owner, we provided them with a good, healthy, nutritional diet full of variety.

And I had to laugh… during winter when salad was the last thing on my mind, the hubby and I went and bought Henry’s food every week and it cost us a fortune with most of his requirements being out of season. We never do that for ourselves and yet we did it and do it for Henry, without a second thought. Our attitude, regardless of the pet – you are obliged to feed, home and love them. Oh! and most importantly, make sure they are happy!

Andi – Well, at least you’re found that Henry is good for SOMETHING. =p

MissD – My husband is a meat and potatoes man. What does he want for dinner? A beef pot roast with potatoes thrown in there. He complains when something doesn’t contain meat. I mean, I think he’s okay if it is like mac and cheese or something. But when it comes to serious meals, he wants his meat to be center stage. That’s what I meant about it being difficult. I would basically have to cook two completely separate dishes (and there is only the two of us!). I’m not a very good cook anyway, so preparing two separate meals just isn’t practical. Oh well, I take my vegetarian frozen entrees to work for lunch and its all good. Sometimes I even have to take things to work with me to share with others because my husband won’t eat it. I like hummus and all, but it’s kind of hard to eat the whole package by oneself before it spoils.

Honestly, someone who would feed a cat vegan shouldn’t have animals period, considering most herbivorous pets are even more sensitive and need an owner that knows what they’re doing. Tamagotchi or nothing.

I’d like to go vegan someday though. Not sure how far I’d get, considering food is a big weak ESS of mine, but that’s the dream.
