I’m new to rabbits and just gone mine last week, and I’ve been letting him out of the cage to hop around my living room for exercise while I’m home. I have laminate floors and a floor rug, and the rug is the only spot that my rabbit is attracted to and has gone to the bathroom and gotten bits of straw etc on the rug, so today I used 409 foam cleaner on the whole thing.

The rug is dry now and I haven’t let my rabbit out yet since cleaning because I’m worried about chemical residue. He likes to chew on the rug — even if the rug has dried, is it still dangerous to him?

Since the rug would be going into his mouth, I would not let my rabbit on the rug (you can put sheets, towels, or blankets over it though). I don’t use any type of chemicals near my rabbits, as they are very sensitive creatures.

You shouldn’t even let your rabbit chew the carpet. The strands that he’s ingesting can cause a deadly blockage, especially if he doesn’t eat very much hay.

You need to discourage him from chewing on the rug. Do you have other things for him to chew on, like cardboard boxes or tubes or old phone books? To clean pee spots out of rugs or carpet without using harsh chemicals, you can mix up a white vinegar and water solution in a spray bottle. You could also add a squirt of natural dish liquid (Seventh Generation, Ecos, etc.) for a little extra cleaning power. I know from experience that this works well to get out stains.

Nature’s Miracle (all of our pet supply stores here carry the Nature’s Miracle line) works well too. I even use their laundry boost!

Another natural ready made cleaner/deodorizer is Earth Friendly Products Pet Stain and Odor Remover.

I also agree with tobyluv on the vinigar. Just spray it on (half vinigar half water), let it soak a few minutes, wipe it off, and the stain should come off. It works amazingly for me.
