So finally Nimmy’s cast is off, he had an appointment to take it off, get an xray and possibly remove the pin yesterday (though his cast came off the morning of) and the vet said his arm is healing better than he expected, so he wanted to leave the cast on for another two weeks. I was good for the idea at the beginning but the more I think about it (and research it) the more I get worried.

Nimmy can’t move his arm very much, though he has begun to put a little pressure on it already. He seems happy that the cast is off, and he’s able to lay in almost any position he likes. But since the pin is still in his arm, keeping it bent at a specific angle, he can’t move it. And I’m worried that he might be in pain, he used to have the cast on and that made a cushion. But now that he doesn’t have one, if he bumps into something, I’m afraid it’ll hurt.

So what are some signs of pain so I can be on the lookout? I know about the not-eating and I’ve been keeping an eye on him, making sure he eats like normal. And the teeth grinding, is there anything else? I’ve got a tiny bit of Metacam left, I’ll give it to him if necessary.

Also what is the normal treatment for an inner-ear infection?

Is the pin sticking out? I would be more worried about the pin being knocked against something. It would probably be a good idea to confine him, which I think you’re already doing.

Does he have an ear infection? An ear infection is generally treated with an antibiotic.

No it’s not, surprisingly. I thought it was until the cast came off. Which totally sucks for me cause now won’t he need another surgery to get the pin out? I wish the vet told me about this beforehand, I don’t want him going under anesthesia so much.

And he did have one, I got nausea meds, pain meds and antibiotics. I was just wondering if he maybe should’ve gotten ear drops instead… I don’t really like my vet and I feel like they’re just getting every dollar they can out of me.

Edit: Oh, and confine him? Uuuggghhhhhhhhhhh the vet never told me to confine him, I kept trying to get ahold of him to ask but literally a week went by and I gave up, Nimmy’s been out and about like normal. I asked on here and everyone said he’d be okay cause he had a cast on.

With the cast on, he was probably fine being allowed to run around. If you’re worried now that the cast is off though, then perhaps it would be a good idea. That was just my suggestion though.

I don’t know if I’d even be able to keep him confined. He’s really used to my work/school schedule and is chewing on the bars if I’m even 10 minutes late. I’ll try to keep him more confined though and keep a close eye on him when he is out.
