So my new rabbit is 4 years old, he has been fed mainly pellets his entire life. He ate about 1 cup per day, and I don’t think he ever saw hay.

It took him a couple of days to get the hang of hay, but now he loves it. And he’s getting fresh veggies every day.

I’m still leaving his pellet dish full as that’s what he’s used to, but I’m wondering how I can go about weaning him down to a more reasonable amount??

He’s eating Martin’s Little Friend’s pellets right now, but will be switching to Oxbow pellets once the amount he’s eating is cut down.

You could slowly take out the amount of pellets (like a couple pinchfuls then a handful, etc, etc) until he gets the amount of pellets you desire. How much does he weigh?

Alli is exactly right! Just lessen the amount slowly over the next month or so… Each week give maybe 1/8 cup less at each daily feeding until you get him down to a reasonable amount for his weight.

Okay I will give that a go. Should I wait until I’ve gotten him down to the right amount before switching his food? Or should I just do everything at once?

I’m not sure how much he weighs.. not very much, he doesn’t appear to be overweight. He’ll be weighed when he goes to the vet on the 11th.

When you get him weighed, you’ll now how much pellets you should be giving him after you’ve slowly weaned him off of the whole bowl full. I think it’s 1\8 cup of pellets per five pounds but I’m not sure. Bun Bun weighs about 2 pounds and gets a little less then 1/8 cup because of his activity level. So take in his weight and activity level in account when choosing an amount to give him If I were you I’d wait to switch foods. We don’t want to upset his little stomach too much! Or as you’re slowly weaning him, take a couple handfuls of pellets away and then add one handful of oxbow pellets and gradually add more oxbow pellets but overall less pellets then what he’s getting now. It’s just all up to how you want to do it
