I have had my rabbit, Odin, just under a year. Odin is a small Polish weighing in at 3 pounds. I have noticed that in the past few weeks he has been sleeping more often then usual. I wake up to find Odin stretched out on his side with his head down. Sometimes I think he’s dead until I can see him breathing. When I talk to him or call his name he will pick up his head for a minute, put it back down, and go back to sleep. He will let me pet him as long as I don’t try to pick him up or he will jump to his feet.

I have read that elderly rabbits sleep more often but when I adopted him from the shelter his papers said he was a year old.

Is this normal for a rabbit?

Rabbits sleep most of the day – they are usually more active dawn and dusk…so yes, this is normal.

It sounds normal to me, especially if it’s daytime and not dawn or dusk that you’re waking him (dawn and dusk are their natural active times).

But, if you think it’s strange/different for his behavior and he is disinterested in his favorite things, then you may want to consider taking him to the vet.
