So on HRS I read that rabbits purr in content like cats except their purring is by grinding their teeth. I’ve witnessed that with Bun Bun i.e petting, massaging, and recently he’s loved to cuddle! But I’ve also seen him grind his teeth in fear. He was outside eating grass when something that I couldn’t see/hear spooked him. He thumped and started grinding his teeth. I guess what I’m trying to ask is what does purring mean? Does it mean content or fear?

I would think content. My rabbits become sort of really stiff and constantly thump their feet when they are scared (they live next to a big glass sliding door, so sometimes they see raccoons or the horses walking by).

          Grinding can also mean pain.

Like Mocha said, the gentle purring accompanied by calm, contented body language is a sign of happiness. But a very loud grinding can also signify pain or sometimes fear.

Marley teeth purrs when he is happy, usually when I’m petting his head or laying next to him. It sounds like a chatter and usually has a rhythmic sound. It’s the cutest! He often will close his eyes. You will know by body language whether it’s something more serious I think.

The first time I heard Meki purr I was scared, haha. I was laying on the couch and she was on my chest starting to close her eyes and I was just petting her and she started chattering her teeth- it sounded exactly like when you’re cold and your teeth chatter. I had to google it with her on my chest and when I found out what it was I gave her a big ol’ hug. Before that, I had never heard a rabbit purr. I’ve heard some teeth grinding while giving pets, but never a chatter like that!

I always thought purring was completely different than the teeth grinding thing. Casper purrs when he is on his back and falls asleep and it actually sounds like a cats purr except more nasally like snoring. I really should make a video one of these days. Its really cute and cat-like.
