Today I noticed blood on the floor of my bunny’s cage. We turned her over and it was on her bottom as well. She has been fine, not acting different at all, eating and drinking. Tonight I noticed a large grapelike cluster of stinky, mucosy poo. She is just under two and is intact. We can’t get her into the vet for two days, what do I do???

Hi Nikkiky, Get her to the vet as soon as you can. That is not a good combination and could be evidence of several health problems. Until you get to the vet monitor her pee and poop for any changes and makes sure she is eating. I would phone around to see if any other vet can see you or if your own vet can make an earlier appointment.

I second Roberta‘s sentiments – try not to panic and keep a close eye on her, try to gently wash off her rear if possible with a bunny butt bath or washcloth dipped in warm (not hot) water. Do try and see if there’s another vet you can see sooner who knows rabbits.

I echo everyone’s advice. You really need to get to a vet quicker than a few days I think; If your vet is all booked up, they will often squeeze you in if it’s urgent or refer you somewhere else.

Thank you all. This morning she jumped out of her cage and is hoping around like she normally does. She ate last night and doesn’t seem in any distress. There is only one vet in our area that will see rabbits and she is booked and will not see her until Wednesday.

Ask if you can be the first called in case of a cancellation.

I would also make sure to bring a sample of the poo when you take her to the vet, that way they can quickly look into what she’s passing even if she doesn’t go while she’s there.

I’m not sure if it makes a noticeable difference with bunnies, but I would also note the darkness of the blood whenever you see it fresh; Usually darker blood indicates that it is older and further up in digestion, while bright colored blood is closer to the end of the tract or even external. That color may be something else to let the vet know when you get there.

I hope she gets better quickly!

The blood is definitely bright red. My husband told me this morning he checked in on her and she bounded out of her cage and got up on her hind legs. To greet him. Hoping it’s something easy to fix for her!! Thank you all again for your advice.

I’m going to guess that the blood has more to do with her not having been spayed than with digestion, although I could be wrong. Make sure the vet knows that your bunny is passing bright red blood. I’ve never heard of a vet that didn’t try to fit in an animal passing bright red blood. This really is urgent.

I hope that you can get your rabbit seen quickly by a vet and that she will be fine.

Thank you. We have spoke with the vet and she gave some suggestions to the possible issues. Her poo issue is likely from a change in her diet. My daughter wanted to try a new veggie (endives), so we took that away from her. She also suggested we inspect her for a cut or sore from digging (i.e. did she dig and break a claw or step on something). So far we have not found any marks, but she will be seen tomorrow morning. Just cutting out the endives seems to have improved her poo and her demeanor. She was very happy and peppy today. She had very little blood, only a drop or two in the litter box and no more big spots. Prayers that we have isolated the problem, but she will be seen tomorrow in the morning!!

Got answers for my baby girl. She had a bladder infection. She will also be getting spayed. Her uterus is slightly enlarged.

Thank you all. She is my 9 year old daughters baby. She is so worried about her having surgery.

Tell her not to worry. Make sure your vet is a very rabbit-savvy vet, and everything will be fine. Spaying is a totally routine procedure, and it will make her so much healthier and happier in the long run. Same goes for anything they might have to remove while they’re spaying her, if that happens.

One last question. Yesterday at the vet she got pretty stressed out, x rays, being examined etc. Yesterday and this morning she’s not eating her usual amount, so she isn’t peeing and pooing as much, and is just kind of hanging out on her favorite piece of carpet. She responds to me and let’s me pet her and she has hopped around some. Could this be from stress?

Her behavior change can certainly be due to stress… Try to keep things very low key for now. Unfortunately, vet visits are a necessary stressor sometimes, but you can’t exactly explain that to her 🙁

Keep us posted on how she does! When is the surgery?

She had her surgery today. Vet said her uterus was just a mess. Can’t be sure if it was cancer or a nasty infection, but she did say all the other organs looked normal. She is coming home tonight on pain medication and antibiotics. I am nervous about it since we have never dealt with post surgery on a bunny!

I was afraid it was her uterus. Glad its out of her! The pain meds will definitely help — if the vet doesn’t automatically send pain meds home with you, ask for some. Give her some quiet, offer her favorite greens (served wet) and her regular pellets, and keep fresh water available. Let her settle in and wake up from the anesthesia (she may be groggy). No running or jumping (for possibly up to 10 days) — your vet will tell you how long. She may not want to eat, but keep offering her wet greens if she won’t eat anything else (even if it means hand feeding them to her). Her poop may be a little smaller and misshapen (normal after surgery).

She is sending her home with pain meds. She suggested using applesauce to give them to her in. I thought about putting a blanket in for her just so to help with comfort. I am going to move her water bottle (someone suggested giving her a crock until she was feeling better), freshen up her hay, and get her some veggies as soon as we get her home. I am so glad this is done, but it’s definetly nerve racking never having taken care of a post operative bunny!

She would have to go a little ways to get in, but not really to far. It is a corner. Litter box so the front is not high.
