I’m curious how others who work full-time or have more than one part-time jobs outside of your home manage bunny time and bunny chores, and have non-bunny parts to your life!

I work 40+ hours a week, M-F, which means I don’t get home until 6:00 or later every weekday. After a quick dinner, my evenings are spent doing bunny stuff. Weekends are for making up hay “go to” boxes, grocery shopping, washing and packaging bunny greens, washing bunny bottles, doing laundry, and cleaning. BB time is squeezed in during the in between times, and the bunnies get my weekend evenings as well.

I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with everything and unorganized right now and looking for ways to streamline whatever I can so I have more time for the fun stuff with my family and my bunnies and spend less time doing the not so fun stuff! So, how do you guys do it all?

Work FT and I have my elderly mother demanding my Saturdays, then there’s the rescue WASAR and my own 7 buns, 2 remaining buns waiting for foster and 3 cats.

My garden looks like the house is derelict and I barely have 4 square feet of personal space besides my bed and the bathtub… Over whelmed would be a good way of putting it, despairing would also be close at times. I would give anything for my garden to be cleared and have a personal space and more than 9 minutes a day to tend to my own needs..

I even shop online for food and clothes otherwise I miss out and only the animals and my Mother get anything. I haven’t been in a hairdressers for approx 8 yrs and just resort to cutting and colouring my own.

You just burst my bubble Roberta! I’ve always thought of you as a super woman have-it-all-together bunny goddess and now I find out my idol is merely human! I am jealous though — you got to keep your bathtub? I had to share mine for bonding!

I get the mother thing. My father passed away back in 2000, and after spending a year driving a half hour each way everyday (sometimes twice a day) to help her with things, we decided it would be easier if she just lived with us.

Maybe there’s a BBer out there who can fill us both in on the secret to doing it all and finding extra hours in a day!

(AH – I know you’re going to read this, and gaining a few extra minutes by not shaving my legs in the winter time is not an option!!)

I love my bath tub… After a couple of years from hell where my ceiling caved in and I went 4 months in the middle of winter with nothing between me and the roof tiles, then my father got sick, then Twinkletoes died… Then Dad died, In between I managed to refinance and do my bathroom and got a bath tub again for the first tie in 16 yrs… Western Australia is the back woods when it comes to bathroom fittings and I finally found a place in the Eastern states that import the tub I needed to fit my tiny bathroom. 2.5K later my tub arrived from Italy and the bathroom reno’s commenced. The only kind of corner tub you can get here is plastic and usually has spa jets fitted in it. Even the smallest one would have meant eliminating the toilet which wasn’t an option. Then I found the Moda Angolo 1350 long by 850 wide and deep enough to submerge in… It was love at first sight.

Sadly the bunnies get to use the bathroom more than I do. I took Pandora and her babies in, Jebediah got cancer and cleaned out my bank account before having to be PTS and then the bottom fell out of the hot water heater. Somewhere in all that the washing machine died too.

I worm full time and I have a second ‘job’ at a local stables that I do every Monday and Tuesday evening. On Saturday I am at the barn again, riding. I find that it’s easier to give Willow her floor time in the mornings (around 6:30) and in the evenings as I’m settling in for bed. Luckily for me I still live at home and I have siblings who are just as fond of her as I am so they are able to give her additional floor time while I’m working. But still, I understand the struggle. I would love for nothing more than to stay at home and play with my bun all day long. But, we need to eat so work I must.

This topic does not entirely pertain to me, but I’m gonna reply anyways! My husband and I are both disabled from illness and injury. We spend a lot of time at doctors appointments. I also share responsibility of caring for my sick mum with my sister. We have a few other things that keep us busy too. In spite of all that, we are truly fortunate that we can spend so much time on our pets. While money may be in short supply, time is not. This is why I feel we can provide a good home for more bunnies than some other people can handle. I admire all of you who work full time , have families and take such good care of your buns. We can’t have children, so we have bunnies and cats it’s a fair exchange I think lol

I work M-F 7:30am – 3:30pm, horse back ride 5-6 days a week, work occasional part-time hours on Saturdays and just took up skydiving (but I dropped archery). I also have two cats.

I guess I am lucky because I don’t have multiple rabbits and I have a REALLY well behaved rabbit. Like I don’t know if he realizes he is a rabbit! ahaha No one tell him okay?

I get up at 5:45am and let out Rocky first thing. I get ready, as he roams the house. I feed the cats and Rocky comes out for his morning salad. I leave about 7am and he is back in his cage for the day. My boyfriend/SO is not completely comfortable with Rocky, so he only sometimes stay out with him. I get home around 4pm and Rocky is let out again for about 30 minutes, than I am off to the stables. I usually get home around 6PM and he has free range of the house again until bed about 11pm-midnight. If I am home he is out. The boyfriend/so typically work noon-10pm, so he is home, but only occasionally let out Rocky. He is getting better Weekends are nice because he gets out a lot more.

I have Timothy and Orchard grass hay bales in my garden shed, so I mix up a big tub the usually lasts 1.5 weeks. The silly rabbit likes his hay chopped too.

Everything else involves very little planning, honestly. I don’t pre make salads, I just grab handfuls of whatever mix he gets that day. I used to scoop his litter, but it was just too time consuming, so I just dump and refill it. This is more expensive, but SO much easier. I figure what I save on buying bales of hay from a farmer, I make up in bedding cost! hah

I dunno, it works for me, but my whole family does seem to think my life is hectic. hah

I’m also part of the working FT club. My weekdays are pretty packed with work, rabbit care, working out, and chatting/Facetime with the bf. By bed time I’m already mentally and physically tired. I don’t have time to watch TV except on the weekends, even then I end up reading instead. Like others I organize and schedule out my week during the weekend. Haha I rely on my phone a lot to make lists and remind me to do errands.

Yeti is really only active during the morning and late evenings, since it matches my weekday schedule. So it’s not too hard to spend some time with him. Plus it helps that his cage and xpen are attached. Essentially free roam in his little area.

I don’t work FT but some time savers I have found with bunny chores are:

Litter screens makes taking care of the litter boxes daily a 10-20s job, instead of a 10 minute job. I just take the garbage can and put it near the boxes, take the screens out and dump em, then scoop the 1-2 wet spots in each box and call it done. Once a week I dump them all, take them into the shower with soap and spray them all down though so that takes about 10 minutes. I’ve stopped trying to scrub the stains out (doesn’t work anyway), so I just put dawn on the bottom and spray it down with really hot water.

For salads, I don’t prep them ahead of time, but I sometimes buy spring mixes and stuff. And pre-chopped kale is a time saver too. Just grab a bunch, rinse it, put it on a plate and give it to them. Takes roughly 2 minutes to make a bunny salad and feed it (I don’t chop, I give full leaves of whatever).

For hay, I keep it in a huge plastic tub in their room. So, when I go to clean out their litter boxes, I just grab a couple of handfuls and put them in the litter boxes. Their daily hay refill takes roughly 10 seconds, since it’s right there. If I am in a rush and need it to last a few days without needing checking on, I can just take a flake out and put it on top of the tub and they’ll help themselves for 2-3 days.

Honestly, the bunny chores aren’t that big a deal for me. I only have two though. And they are in a bunny room rather than a cage, so there is no cage cleaning, just mopping / sweeping the floor when it gets dirty. I do have to sweep daily sometimes (a lot of the time) when they forget their litter habits. But, run a broom over it and into a dust pan takes a few minutes. I allot about 10 minutes before bed for rounding up/cleaning boxes/sweeping floors/feeding. I don’t do it in the mornings. Rest of it is just letting them out and playing with them, but they tend to just loaf around my room while I am doing other things.

So, yeah, about 10 minutes a day with an extra 10 minutes of work on weekends is what I have bunny stuff down to. I am at home most the day though, so their play time is just when I wake up they come out and when I go to bed, they go back. If I get busy, I don’t feel too bad not letting them out, since they have the MASTER BEDROOM to themselves.

Don’t worry JR, not shaving my legs was done out of pure laziness and being married for toooo long and not caring anymore! Lol!

I have to be honest and say that both you and Roberta along with a few other BBer’s, always astound me how you ‘do it all’! But I believe it’s a ‘you do what you have to do’ thing! I think back to when I was on my own with 3 kid’s and working, and kept a perfectly clean house (I drove everyone nut’s!) along with all the yard work I did – no way could I do that now. Gosh, I can barely look after ‘one’ bunny! Lol! But I’m sure it’s cause ‘I don’t have to’???

But I think that’s why I have always been free roam with all my pets. It started with being away from home working, and then being busy while at home – it was easier to let everyone hang out with me throughout the whole house while I was busy, than to find time to hang out with them. Does that make sense? A bit like letting the dog’s sleep with me, that’s how I made up for not having time to spend with them through the day, they got me at night. Even Henry, except for him napping, he is always in the same room as me. If he wants my company, he is free to come get it, wether it be at my desk, in the kitchen or even the loo – no place that I spend time is off limits to him.

Oh, and that’s how my ‘1’ dog turned into 4!!! I got the second dog to keep the first dog company – they had puppies and I HAD to keep one, then get her a boyfriend of her own – good grief! If it wasn’t for the dog’s and me being home now, I reckon Henry would have gotten a girlfriend???

As far as ‘pre-prep’ – I was the Queen! I always cooked a weeks worth of meals in one day for the freezer. With meat based casseroles I added HEAPS of veggies for nutrition, and I always made lunches the night before (I am and was never a morning person). Even now, when I make Henry’s veggies, I always do 2 nights worth – I can’t break the habit! Ha ha ha ha! The other one goes into the fridge covered in cling wrap.

Sorry JR, I can’t make any other suggestions, your pretty well doing everything the way I would if I was still working. And trust me, I know ‘every’ short cut!

PS Roberta – for all that you do, your still my HERO!!!

I’m gone on weekdays, sometimes Saturdays too. The buns are typically “out” in their room though, so I guess I don’t really worry about designated play times. My husband has the house torn up with his insane remodeling projects and the buns can’t really come out into the living room right now anyway.

You guys make me feel silly for feeling like I overdo it! Glad I’m not the only who’s life with bunnies gets hectic at times. Guess its time to get over my personal pity party!

I envy those of you who don’t work or work from home and get to spend more time with your bunnies. But I guess the grass is always greener ….

Roberta, I gotta hand it to you, I don’t know that I could keep my sanity with all that you do! I can definitely see me going on one of my “missions” after that bathtub though! LOL! That is one nice tub! I have to agree with Andi — you’re my hero too!

Oh NO JR! We all did/do what your experiencing – trying to find extra time to spend with those you love and adore, absolutely nothing wrong with that! All the tricks I learned from when I was in your position were self taught, I was desperate to try to save time on tasks to spend a bit of time enjoying why I was working so hard for. I still find it madness that I had to work when my kid’s were young and now that they are adults I’m stuck at home – DUMB!

The grass is always greener??? Yep! When I worked I had the additional funds to do stuff but didn’t have the time. Now, I have the time and no funds! Go figure??? Let me translate that for you – you can’t win!

JR, you are not having a pity party! It is simply that Roberta’s heroic acts outshine us all!
I work full time too, (8-5 M-F) and it always feels really busy. I also have the lovely gift of being OCD, so I usually end up staying up pretty late getting it all done. So much for “What’s TV,” for me it is “What’s Sleep?”

I know “what’s sleep?” too! I have a bit of OCD too, but only to do with things like locking doors, closing gates, etc. and anything potentially fire related (unplugging everything, making sure stove is turned off, etc.). Too bad I’m not that way about diligently cleaning. I’ve found that the more stressed I feel, the worse the OCD is.

I don’t work and sometimes I am so busy with work around the house( its just me and my husband I wonder how does this place get so messy?) and helping take care of my 2 month old grandson that I don’t have the time I would like to spend with my bunnies. I am so glad they are bonded to each other now it relieves a lot of the bunny cleaning and guilt that one bunny may have gotten more attention than the other. I would love them to be free range but they love to chew things up too much and my husband isn’t too fond of them. I let them out in a sectioned off part of the living room several times during the week when he is working. I also spend time with them in their room.

I don’t have OCD but sometimes in the past I would have periods where say if I was shopping or going to pick something up I would feel that I had to keep the first thing I touched. It was weird and I also get overwhelmed when I shop and there are a lot of choices.

Anyways JR it can get overwhelming at times for us all. This is definitely the place to get input and hear from others. I hope you feel better about things. =)

Sindriona — I do feel better, but would still like a magic pill or something that would either speed me up significantly or add more hours to each day! I only need 3 or 4 more hours everyday!

I hear you on the too many choices thing. I think the most often words out of hubby’s mouth are “just pick one”! (that’s how I went from 2 bunny to 3! Couldn’t decide between Marlee and Moshi so I got them both!)

When I went to pick out my first rabbit I really had a hard time choosing. I wanted 2 but my husband was smart because he knew me well and he also gives in a lot so he only brought enough money to buy one bunny.

Jersey – my hubby changes out bunny litter boxes, refills bottles, and shop vacs the bunny area every night so O can have “quality time” with the bunnies. He also cleans bathrooms and does the yardwork. I get laundry, bill paying, grocery shopping, dealing with the cars and house stuff, dealing with my mother (lives with us) and my son, and everything else. It doesn’t sound like alot but it just gets never-ending much of the time. My mother’s “job” is loading and unloading the dishwasher (onto the kitchen counter). My mother is a packrat and thrives on clutter, son makes and leaves a mess in whatever room he goes in. Clutter makes me nuts so that’s probably the biggest stresser.

Even though Fall is my favorite season weatherwise, its also the time of year that I go through my “thing” where I hate my job (no particular reason) and can’t seem to keep up with things at home. It always passes, but I still always look for a better way to do things, especially this time of year. Dread of the upcoming holidays (my father and grandparents all died right at Thanksgiving and Christmas) usually gets me out of my “Fall funk” because I do everything I can to keep my mind super busy so I don’t dwell on them.

My boyfriend actually is the one who taught me how to handle all my doings – before we broke up, he had me reading a book on time management. It was actually VERY helpful, especially once I was living on my own, working full-time, volunteering, and taking care of five bunnies alone while also going to his house to take care of the other two while he was away on vacation/work travel so they wouldn’t have to be boarded anywhere.

Now I’m back to the grind of working full-time, taking care of seven bunnies (although two only sometimes since we aren’t living together again yet), volunteering, going to school, dealing w/ my doctors appts for my STILL undiagnosed illness, and I just took up horseback riding again!

I have a daily planner w/ a list of everything I need to do for the day (which is actually just a small journal) along w/ a weekly planner & a monthly planner to keep everything organized. I have found it works really well for me! The time management book also taught me to make a schedule of your day and include what you plan on doing for the day in the schedule (I was making them weekly) so you’ll get everything done but be able to schedule your own personal time as well. I actually found I could find WAY more personal time when it was planned than when I was hectic and all over the place!

Some of my list can get pretty long so I try to stick with daily urgent things and leave the rest for “if I finish evetything else”. I’ve always thought that you try to do too much (exhausts me just thinking about all the things you are able to take on!). Maybe you should spend a little time in Roberta’s bathtub!!!

By the time I get home from work, I am grumpy and tired and even though I have plenty of time, I never want to do anything. It’s hard to motivate myself to do even the things I love. It’s very frustrating. But I have no choice about taking care of Pippin, so that is one thing that always gets done–although not as well as I’d like.

Now, it takes me till lunch time to think about all that has to be done – I hate it! I hate that I feel this way. I want to do everything, but I have no enthusiasm – I only do what I have to, not what I want to. I’m not sure if age is really the excuse, but that’s what I’m blaming it on…. cause I don’t have another excuse – doh! I should be at my happiest – I no longer look after or clean up after a tribe, yet I struggle each day to do half what I used to do.
I don’t mind looking old, I’m the first to admit my age, and never try or pretend to be younger (if anything, I tell people I am older on the chance they may say I’m looking good for my age??? Huh? Lol!), I just wish I had my energy and enthusiasm back….. why I blame age. It sucks – big time!
