I’ve got a question about bunny feet. Roxie, our mini rex, has. Developed little bare patches/callouses on her heels and a couple on a forepaw. These have been coming on for a couple years now, but I noticed today how much they’ve grown. They are not cracked or bleeding or sore, just little round callouses. The fur on her feet does not seem as thick as the other bunnies. The floor or her cage is solid wood and she has a coupe carpet squares to sit on. We can’t get anything too plush or Caesar and she will eat it. She doesn’t seem to favor her feet or seem tender. Should I be concerned? Is that normal for her breed? Thanks!

It is unfortunately. Rexes don’t have the extra protection of longer fur on base of the hocks like other breeds do. Keeping their nails short will help. It’s tricky with rexes as their nails look longer then other bunnies and apparently they are more curved??

Be careful with carpet as some can be abrasive.
Some people have found those microfibre memory foam bath mats to be good. Would that be too plush?
Probably, if they are chewers. I’m just thinking of how quickly Ailís chewed a hole in theirs.

Would they eat fleece over grass/hay mats?

JR I may have to try that. The memory foam bath mat would be a huge disaster lol

My bunnies are “plushy” chewers as well. What works for me is a layer of memory foam mats and towels, then a layer of fleece pulled taut and held there with several bricks in the corners and on the edges of the pen. I find if everything is pulled tight and they are unable to dig it up, it doesn’t get chewed.
