        Hello BinkyBunny!
I’m currently in the process of remodeling my bunnies rabbit room and two of my bunnies always seem to be interested in climbing up high. Nowhere is safe from them! Be it the back of the couch, kitchen table, top of the stairway, or just on a box! I would like to incorporate some shelves for them to climb but I dont want them to get hurt, so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on where to set a height limit on the shelves?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
        Thanks!
        Sami, Ruby, Jasper, & Rex

(and if anyone has any cool ideas for the room thoes are welcome too! ^.^)

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Personally, I think that if the shelves are open (no sides or barriers along them), you don’t want to go higher than 6″. I know that’s very low, but I would be terrified otherwise that something might happen to the bunnies if any higher.

However, a good thing you might want to consider is building them something like a mini NIC condo / a tunnel tower, with barriers on the top and sides so that they can climb to their hearts’ content and you don’t have to worry!

I would say a good guideline is to stick to the height you bunny is comfortable jumping up and down. For example, if your bunny jumps off and on things that are 1′ high then open ledges of 1′ are fine, but open ledges 2′ high with a step or ramp up are a bad idea. However, if your rabbit does jump 2′ comfortably, a 2′ open ledge is fine, b/c they can jump down without falling.

Even for bunnies only comfortable jumping 1′, a 2′ space that was enclosed except where the step up or ramp is so that they couldn’t fall off the other side would be fine.

I never though about using nic cubes as a way to enclose higher shelves/ramps Its a fantastic idea, plus I have like a gazillion nic cubes laying around (we use them for barriers around wires). Ruby frequently jumps down from hights 4ft high, she needs a chair to get to the table but otherwise thats a straighshot to the ground too. But thats WAY higher than jasper will jump down from. I think Ill definatly use the nic cube idea, plus then I could turn some of them into tunnels! Crazy, but it just might work!

Will do! It’ll be a week or so before it gets finished, there is a futon going in there, plus new hay racks to build/buy, rugs to get, litterbox arrangements, we are thinking of building castle towers for climbing! Going to be awesome! Ill try to post pics when its finished!

Well…… I didn’t think my bed was too high TILL Henry did a flop on the end and fell off – HA HA HA HA HA!

Sorry! But it was funny! (this happened months ago and I still laugh every time I think about it!).

I have always wanted to build a shelf around my bedroom for Midas to climb.. The plan is generally to do a ramp up to the next wall, and then have a shelving system around the bedroom.. Of course this would all be enclosed with the NIC grips, zip tied tightly to the board.

Hopefully I explained that well enough for you to understand.. Haha.

I checked with our vet about our new sideways E hidey house and shelf because I was afraid it was too tall for my little buns to jump off of — its 13 inches tall. She said it was fine. We have a ramp to the top, but so far Moshi easily jumps up on it but uses the ramp to come down.

My bunnies have a shelf 14″ high, and they can jump down just fine. I am sure they could jump up as well, if they weren’t so lazy. They just use the step I have given them.
Andi-Ha ha ha! That is too funny!

My guy loves to play on the cat tree/scratching post. He can jump off the top of it just fine and its about 6-7 feet. Any higher would probably make me nervous!
