I have an XL dog crate for my two bunnies (a mini lop and an around 12lb mutt) that measures 30″x30″x48″.  I also have an 8 – 24″ pannel x-pen that is 30″ in height.  I let them roam around the x-pen and cage (they’re attached) during the day (I’m home) and lock them in the kennel at night or if I need to go somewhere.

Can they get over the x-pen? I’d really like to let them have free roam in it all day/night.

30″ is a little iffy for the 12 lbs bun; they’re bound to figure out that they can leap over the top. I’m always astonished at how high even the little bunnies can get. You may want to look into extending the height somehow, or if you can do a return/exchange where you got your current 30″ pen, and then getting at least a 36″ high pen.

I read somewhere that if they really want to, rabbits can jump on average around three feet so we bought a massive playpen for Bramble I think its 46 inches high, I have to say that while he has never been able to get out of it which is obviously a good thing, I wish I had gotten a slightly smaller one because I cant reach or step over the height of it so if I want to give him a quick pet when I am passing his pen I can only reach if he stands up on his back legs and if I want to get in the pen with him I have to open it right up and get in. Its not a huge deal now that he is a little older because he is allowed more free roaming and I guess it gives me piece of mind when we leave him in his pen if we are out or something.

It can’t be exchanged and if I make it higher I can’t get into it. It doesn’t have a gate and I am short so I can barely step over it as is. Maybe I will get some hooks and shorten the length of the gate (they are in a nook and it is really just there to protect a cord running on one wall and on the opening of the nook) then I can use the pannels I took off to add height to the three that form the gate in the opening of the nook and secure one side to the wall with latches so I can open/close it but achieve a 60″ height. Assuming it doesn’t just fall over, even when properly attached to the walls.
