I’ve had Toby for about two and a half months. a 1.5 yr old rabbit –unknown mix breed

Last night Toby was completely normal. In the mornings he’s usually waiting patiently (somedays not patiently…) for me to open the cage doors for his morning bouce-about.

But this morning was completely different. He was hiding out in the corner and was not enticed by anything that usually gets him excited. I felt his body and ears and they were colder than I have ever felt his body. When I was able to get him out of the cage, he’d just run to any corner of the room and lay down (this is normally his binky time — so you can imagine my worried wart mind setting off alarms).

The husband had to stay at home today to work, and I thought about let Toby work out whatever it is, whether it be gas bubbles or just something tough he’s trying to digest, at least hubby will be home to look after him. But the cold ears set off a signal, and I thought it would be best to take him to the vet.

As I had to head off to work, he’s at the vet’s right now, and they’re force feeding and warming him up in an incubator and keep him overnight just to be sure. X-rays were suggested, but I wasn’t sure if it was necessary so I passed on it. The vet thinks it’s gas, but without an x-ray they can’t know for sure. On one of the vet visits, we did xrays, and the vet charged for a 2nd
xray on day 2 that we didn’t know about but had to pay for anyway, so this is why
I passed on it this time, but I’m not sure if that was the best choice
        on my part…

The unfortunate thing about living in Canada, I can’t seem to find an exotic animal insurance provider!

I feel like he’s gone to the vet so many times since I’ve had him (it’s only been a little over two months — and he’s been to the vet at least 3 times for an overnight stays), I’m hoping I made the right choice and that I am not wasting my money when I could do it at home.

Am I being an over-cautious pet mom?

I don’t think you’re being over-cautious at all, and I would have taken him to the vet too.

His temperate is back to normal, thank goodness, but his breathing is rapid still. so they’re monitoring that. And waiting for him to poop! he’s taking force feeding well, and he had a few pellets. They’re still keeping him over night, but it seeems like he’s getting better.

Thank goodness Hopefully I’ll be able to see him tomorrow. I miss his little furry face.

Sounds like GI stasis or slow down, gas can be a cause. His symptoms are exactly what my Rupert had both times he had stasis. Glad to hear he’s on the mend! It’s scary!

What other health issues have you had come in the short time you’ve had your bunny? What is his diet? I wonder if you can’t do a little diet/exercise management to avoid further issues? Or maybe he needs his teeth done?

I also am in Canada and I think there are some insurers now; there weren’t when my rabbits were young (and afford ably insurable!) so definitely keep hunting around maybe some other Canadian members can suggest their companies. In the US they are lucky and seem to have some good companies.

Although I’m not sure your rabbit would be insurable; or may not be fully insurable. Usually if there are health issues then that issue is not insurable. Say for instance, if your dog had an eye infection on record, you would not be able to get insurance and claim the next eye issue on insurance. But definitely worth checking out!

I think you made a great choice opting out of the x-ray. I got talked into that last time Rupert had stasis and between that and blood work (also unnecessary in a stasis episode but I felt like I needed to do what the vet was recommending) I ended up with an four figure vet bill-that’s still hurting.

Ditto this. You’ll want to try figure out what caused this.
I think you made a good choice taking him in! Going cold like that is a bun heading into shock.

Happy to hear he’s responding well. Hpefully you’ll have him home soon.

ETA: do you have CareCredit there? This seems similar, however I didn’t look at it in detail.. :/

Unfortunate news. Toby Crossed the rainbow bridge overnight at the vets. I still can’t believe it.
