Hi everyone! I’m new to this forum. I’ve googled so much but I couldn’t find anything to help.

I have a 11 month female lop, her groomer recently came to my house to groom her and told us to stop giving her pellets and veggies for the next two days cause she is bloated. But after googling and checking my bun out. She doesn’t seem to be bloated, or at least to me. I know bloat is a painful thing to experience but my bun is not showing or behaving like she’s in pain or any sort. She’s still the same active little rascal who begs for treats (we have controlled this quite abit already!) she eats and drinks like how she normally does. Her poo is normal. She’s eating her hay much more than usual which is always good. Her tummy is soft and doesn’t stick out from the side when she lies down. Nor does it make any gurgling sounds.

We stopped her pellets as suggested by the groomer but by the second day, she’s acting like we starved her and she’s very hungry. And her hay moved faster than usual. So I’m just wondering if this is a cause for concern? Or how should I check for bloat/gas? How much should I be feeding her? She’s about 1.5kg (about 3lbs).

What did the groomer base this diagnosis on? If your rabbit is eating and pooping normally, has the same activity level as usual, has a normal feeling and sounding stomach, doesn’t show any signs of distress or discomfort, then it sounds like she is okay. It is good not to feed too many treats, but you’ve already cut down on that. At her age and weight, she should only get about 1/8 cup of pellets per day. Unlimited hay of course and a cup or so of veggies.

Why don’t you contact the groomer and ask him/her what he or she observed that brought on the conclusion of bloat in your bunny? Find out if there is anything specific that was seen, felt or heard during the grooming session.

I’m not sure how a groomer would know if a rabbit is bloated or not…

If her activity level is the same and she is urinating and pooping I don’t see a cause for concern.

How much pellets are you currently giving her? Those should be the smallest amount of her diet – about 1/4 cup daily. Hay should be unlimited. Greens – minimum 2 cups chopped veggies for every 6 pounds – keep in mind that is just a minimum amount.

I’m feeding her a tablespoon of pellets twice a day. Is that too little or too much? She has access to unlimited hay and water. Half a cup of veggies per day.

Hmm. When she was being grommed, the grommer sort of like tapped her stomach and it had this empty sound like when you hit a drum. Yesterday I carried her and check on her tummy, it didn’t produce any of that sound.

Should I up her veggies? She seems so hungry

              Thanks for the advice

If you are still concerned I would consult a vet… If she is hungry I would feed her, a nice moist salad and a small serve of pellets. I think any sudden change to diet, unless recommended by your vet, should be avoided.

I’m no expert, but I know from experience, that bloat and/or gas are very painful for a rabbit and rabbits become lethargic and refuse food while experiencing this.
