My holland lop Mason has been neutered since  months. I have handled him daily and in the last few months I have been letting him free-roam in my room at all times and so far so good. He’s really good at hygiene and great potty trained. I have never seen a pellet on my floor that he hasn’t eaten a few seconds later. He’s always been kind as well and more independent. He nudges me when he wants head rubs, will play around me. Has never nipped me. Doesn’t care for toys or even being picked up once in a while.

He’s a little over 9 months now and as I picked him up one day, I smelled bunny semen on his lower area. I thought this was odd and did research and read that male bunnies can still hold some in them and it’s natural if there is just some left. I didn’t think too much about it, but after discovering that he has been so moody. A little bit aggressive as well and I’m so taken back by it that I don’t even know how to handle it. Sometimes he even ignores me, like he’ll face his back towards me and wants nothing to do with me. I have changed nothing with his area and he is still free to roam around my room whenever he pleased. He has also gotten a bad habit on pooping on his bedding because his floor is wired, I have the rest covered up besides the bathroom and up until now he’s always went to the bathroom there but now it’s everywhere on his bed mat and on the floor around his cage. I don’t know what’s going on.

How do I reach out to him and is this normal if the bunny is neutered?

Oh gosh VFB – I have no idea??? Not that I know this, but I highly doubt it is bunny semen, so I wouldn’t be concerned about that – at a guess (and remember I have NO idea!), I think he’s just being cheeky! What you have described sounds exactly how my bunny, that I’ve had free roam for a year and a half now behaves – sounds perfectly normal to me!
Now that I’ve replied and bumped it up again, someone who knows about bunny behaviour will see it and reply to you.
My bunny is naughty all the time – and I haven’t been able to fix him, so I’m not to best to give advice, LOL!

            Cheers VFB.

I’m curious why you think it smells like bunny semen?

I’m with AH, I doubt that’s what it is. After a male is neutered, they do have residual sperm left and can potentially impregnate a female bunny for up to 4 to 6 weeks possibly, but I’m pretty sure they don’t hold in and then just let it go at some point.

Could it be urine? Bunny urine can be different colors depending on what the bunny had eaten, and bunnies excrete excess calcium through their urine as well, making the urine cloudy or clear depending on how much calcium is excreted.

How long ago was he neutered? Their hormones will be all over the place for 4 to 6 weeks post-neuter. Otherwise, he sounds like a typical teenage bunny to me.

Maybe you should take him to the vet just in case. He may have something wrong. Or he might just be being a little stinker. My boy Nibbles has been neutered for some time and sometimes he’s naughty and goes around his box. But for the most part he’s great. And as far as it being semen I doubt it. Sounds like urine. Again with the aggressive behavior and everything else I think a trip to the vet wouldn’t hurt. Good luck.

I’ve been around bunnies where their horomones were out of control and the particular smell of it is something I remember clearly. But Mason was neutered 5 months ago…so smelling it again has dumb founded me and it’s not the liquid itself because I’m pretty sure it was dry on his fur when I picked him up it’s the smell. I just the know smell LOL

that is so funny that you said that. I knew they had stages where they are in their teenage mode, but didn’t think it’d happen so soon !
