        Aloha guys!

Im a first time bunny owner and the proud mommy of a 6 week old holland lop. Im worried because i woke up this morning and found a bunch of poop that looks like this. Please let me know if you guys have any idea what is it! The vet who sees bunnies is an hour drive and I’m sick today. Im willing to drive there if necessary! Ive been feeding em pellets and hay with fresh daily water! Thanks guys!!

They look like cecals to me but they aren’t formed uniformly like cecals should be…cecal are their “night” droppings” but they are normally very uniform kind of like grape clusters – maybe these are, but I cannot tell from the photo – could be he stepped on them and that is why they are misshapen – normally baby rabbits produce more cecals due to their diet.

That being sad, I think it would be a very good idea for you to schedule a visit with the vet for an initial exam and also ask for a fecal test to check for coccidia.

I agree with Sarita. They do look like they could be cecals, but with a 6 week old bunny, it’s best to have a vet do an overall checkup as well as test for coccidia (this type of coccidia is normally easily treated).

Thanks guys! Mushroom is acting normal and Im wondering if its because I over fed pellets maybe not enough hay! I refilled his hay and limited the pellets and his poo or whatever those things are called are seemingly back to normal all day. I found the poops where he sleeps so he must have stepped all over them!

That’s most likely what it is. Once he reaches about 7 weeks, you will want to gradually switch him over to Timothy hay and Timothy hay pellets as opposed to alfalfa.

Ok that was my nest question because I’ve been feeding mushy Kaytee brands juvenile diet that seems to mostly be made of alfalfa. So I got em timothy hay and mush has been eating it fine! Is that ok?

ps we were cuddling and mush was running around and i turned over to collect some lovely poos left behind and when i rolled back over i kinda squished em a little! mush is acting totally normal so would i know if i hurt em?

                  -worried new mommy!

And should I be feeding em unlimited amount of pellets? Ive only been feeding 1/4 a day and unlimited hay. is this ok? Thanks guys!!

                            http://rabbit.org/faq-diet/

The House Rabbit Society says “access to alfafa and pellets” up to 7 weeks, and from 7 weeks to 7 months “unlimited pellets, unlimited hay”. It doesn’t specify what kind of pellets, but I think most people use alfalfa-based pellets for 7 weeks to 7 months. For hay, it sounds like they are recommending alfalfa hay to start, then timothy hay at 7 weeks.

My rabbits never had alfalfa hay, just timothy hay (breeder’s choice). I tried 1/2 cup of (alfalfa-based pellets) to start, but my 6-week olds were over-producing cecals, so I cut them back to 1/4 cup a day and they seem to be satisfied. My exotic vet OK’d this diet. I’m switching them to timothy-based pellets at 6 months, which is earlier than the HRS recommends, but my vet thinks this is best (they’re dwarfs nearly at their full size, and get plenty of veggies every day).

You can do either type pellet, but if you have access to oxbow junior rabbit food, I would suggest that for the first few months anyway. Alfalfa based pellets along with alfalfa hay can be pretty rich. Our vets both had us go with timothy hay from the start and alfalfa pellets and switch to timothy pellets at @ 4 months or whenever we finished the bag of pellets. Kieko started out on alfalfa hay and was horrible to switch. Marlee and Moshi have never had alfalfa hay.

Edit: Kieko was on alfalfa hay when we got her and we slowly switched her but boy did she fight it!

You guys are so helpful!! thank you so much!! Im gonna keep her (Im pretty sure just found out he was a she!)on the diet i have been now. She seems to be doing good with the timothy hay! I’m thinking its smart to keep the pellets to up to a 1/4 cup because when i gave her too much she overloaded cecals!! Its so hard cause she’s so cute and begs so cutely! She’s gets so excited when i put pellets in her dish! I feel like im starving her!

The ones who like pellets always get excited. Whether pellets or salad, I’m always afraid mine are going to hurt themselves trying to get to the food so fast. Gotta admit they are adorable running circles around my feet while I’m serving up food!
