Back in June my rabbit Twig died and I did not plan on getting another rabbit anytime soon but last week someone on one of the rat groups on Facebook posted pics of the rabbits at a local high kill shelter so I went down Sunday to see if I could find a new rabbit. I did not know what to expect since I have never got a animal from a shelter before but I definitely was not expecting what happened when we got to the rabbit pen. There were somewhere between 20 & 30 rabbits in the pen and the lady who worked at the shelter said that I could not go in with them because they would scratch. I told the worker that I wanted a male rabbit and I would point out the rabbits I was interested in so she could sex them and she was picking the rabbits up by their ears at which point I was feeling sick and just wanted to leave so I took the second male that she caught because he seemed a little friendlier then the first one. The adoption process was just paying them $5 and giving them my name and address. I checked him over on the way home and other then having a few bites and looking like he is missing the tip of his tail he seems to be very healthy. He has adjusted very fast and the only thing that seems to bother him is when I tried touching him. He seems like he may be playful which would be really nice since none of my previous rabbits liked any of the toys I bought or made for them so I would love to see the playful side of a rabbit. Enough of that here are some pictures of Sir Tainted the blue tort Mini Rex.

He’s adorable! He may be a bit afraid of being touched because he’s been mishandled. The breeder I got my lops from used to pick the bunnies up by the skin on their backs. I’ll have had them a year on October 6, and they still flinch when I first touch their backs. Head rubs, side rubs, even butt rubs are fine, but back pets are still iffy.

I’m so sorry about Twig. Sir Tainted is stunning! You cannot beat that gorgeous velvet soft fur of a rex.

It’s sad that even in the shelter those poor rabbits aren’t being handled correctly – I would have been sick too and would have wanted to slap that worker – it’s no wonder the rabbit’s scratched.

Gorgeous! I love his coloring. It looks like it would change colors depending on which light he was in. So cool!

On a side note about your screen name – my husband’s nickname from high school is Bones. In fact, I don’t think some of his friends even know his real name. Lol. They call him that because he was Sooo super skinny.

I’m sorry to hear about Twig. ***Binky Free Twig***

Sir Tainted looks precious! He’s a lucky boy you came by an adopted.
(On the shelter, do you know if your local rescues are aware of the number this shelter has? Be great if they could move them out if there. )

Thanks everyone, I was picking up his poops today and I held my hand down to him and he let me pet his head and back . Sarita I love how the colors show on the rex fur. BrunosMama that is neat , my screen name is the name of my first house rabbit who I called Bones because he was really skinny when I got him. jerseygirl most of the rescue are full already because there have been a few large rabbit confiscations here already .
