As I discussed in another post, Jack has been in love with our couch since we brought him home, and his marking it with droppings and licks quickly escalated to peeing on it, too. We remove him from the couch every time he gets up there now. However, today and yesterday he peed directly in front of the couch. There was a very substantial pile of droppings there too, again like he just used it as a litter box. I tried to clean it up with vinegar, but maybe some of the urine scent was still there because it was the exact same place.

I have seen recommendations for keeping one or more extra litter boxes out during play time, especially in the beginning. This is only Jack’s third week with us. The living room he’s allowed to run in is not huge, but I suppose the litter box is not immediately visible from his current pee spot on the carpet, if that makes a difference.

What I was wondering is if we put an extra litter box there, will that just reinforce that in front of the couch is a great place to use the bathroom, or would we be able to remove it at some point?

You could try adding a litter box there since he seems determined to pee on or near the couch anyways. After a few weeks, you could try gradually pulling it away and see if that solves the problem.
