        Hello,

not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I wanted to see what you guys thought on this matter.

I have yet to see my bunny do two things: 1) sleep, and 2) eat cecal (cecil?)

I know that rabbits tend to sleep during the day so let me comment that I used to have a job that was mostly an evening job and I would be with her from  8 in the morning to around 7 in the evening.  I have yet to see this behavior.  I’m assuming that she does do this because, well…she’s still alive and healthy so i’m guessing she’s getting the nutrients.

Also, i’ve yet to see her sleep.  I see her lie down but I’ve never seen her pass out.  she’s flopped a few times (hence her name), but i haven’t seen her actually doze off.  And now i have a more 8 to 5 job.  So i can’t comment about during the day, but sometimes I wake up in th emiddle of the night and I check up on her and she’s like popping her head up to look back at me

        Thoughts?

Well, rabbits do mostly sleep during the late morning until the early evening. But, being the prey species that they are, they can wake up instantly at the slightest sound or smell, so I’m not surprised you find her seemingly wide awake when you come to check on her. As far as eating cecals, you would notice if she wasn’t eating them because you’d see them. Have you ever seen her bend over and stick her head between her legs? It may look like she’s grooming herself. If you watch carefully, though, you may see her eating something. This is her ingesting the cecals.

Agreed. Also, rabbits sometimes sleep with their eyes open!

Bunnies usually eat their cecals at night, which is why they are sometimes called “night droppings”.

It may be silly, but I’ve heard that bunnies often prefer to eat their cecals privately. I’ve never seen Moshi or Kieko eat theirs. Marlee doesn’t seem to care who is watching, but I only know she’s eating them because she often is chewing when she comes up from down there. Doesn’t surprise me with her because she’s the only one who eats normal poops that are laying around, and she doesn’t care who sees that either!

Yep, bunnies can sleep with their eyes open. So your bunny may have been dozing and you just didn’t know it.

I am ‘grateful’ that I’ve never seen Henry eat his poop! Lol! I know it’s normal – but, no thanks! If I see his head in the direction of his bottom, I look away. He he heh he he…..

Henry sleeps with his eyes open all the time – freaky! I look for a nose twitch. If his nose is still, he’s asleep. If his nose is twitching/moving I know he’s tricking me!

Edit to ADD – Only cause JR admitted to it….. (ha ha ha!) I will admit that I have seen Henry eat the odd stray poop on the bed. For as gross as it is, I don’t mind – I don’t have to pick it up later !  (but I still turn my head away – YUCK!) Lol!

My rabbit almost always sleeps with his eyes open. I’ll think he’s just being lazy and laying around and go to talk to him and he will jump and then kind of wake up. I feel bad all the time from waking him up when I thought he was awake. The only time my bun ever sleeps with his eyes closed is after a long playtime he just kind of passes out from being so tired. It’s quite cute lol

awww… i still have yet to see Flopsie sleep. Even when she flops to her side, her eyes are open.

I think I may have seen her eat a cecal once. The other day, she was just sitting there and all of a sudden she goes between the legs, comes back up and is chewing…. so i think that might be it, one thing crossed off the list.

Bun Bun has no shame and eats his cecals every time he’s out for play time. Sometimes he poops it, turns around and eats them or he goes between his legs and comes back up chewing. Also, he sleeps with his eyes open so when he’s out for play time he loafs or flops for a long time and then he wakes up and does a yawn. It’s quite adorable hehe
