I’m afraid Gizmo may have an upper respiratory infection. He has been sounding very “snorty”, almost like he’s congested. I notice it the most when he’s eating. He sounds like he is having trouble breathing I first noticed it maybe a week/week and a half ago. He was just at the vet about 2 weeks ago to get his teeth checked and the vet said he looked good. His ears are fine and from what I can tell his nose isn’t runny, but his eyes have been getting gunky. The soonest I can get him to the vet is Friday, is there anything I can do in the meantime? I’m not sure what I should be watching for as far as determining when it’s an emergency. I feel sad for my Gizmo

You may need to turn the volume up to hear, and the more “snorty” breathing starts about 20 seconds in

Does he do this only when you pet him, or do you hear it when he’s just hanging out as well? It does sound like a potential breathing issue.

When he is just hanging out, it’s more of a squeak/low snorting. It sounds the worst when he’s eating or sniffing for food. He does these very loud snorts, but not his usual “yummy!” snorts, more like he’s congested (I hope that makes sense). He does snore, but lately his breathing is just sounding odd compared to how it normally is. I think we are going to take a trip to the vet on Friday, just to be safe.

Edit: oh, and also last night I put my hand on his side, near his lungs, and I could feel the snorting noises, which is what really led me to think that maybe there’s something going on.

Yeah, that sounds like an issue that should definitely be checked out by a vet. Let us know how it goes on Friday!

Yes! The plan is still to go on Friday so I will keep you updated!

Well, I can say that it seems like the noises have decreased. I still hear it when he’s eating but he I’m not hearing it as much when he is just relaxing. I was sitting with him today and looking at his nose and I couldn’t figure out of I was seeing dried up stuff. I think I was looking at it for so long my brain started to get confused. I felt around his nose as much as he would let me and I didn’t feel anything dried up, but it just looked darker than I remembered it being (but maybe I am over thinking this)

I will say now…I’m looking at older pictures and I think he has always had those darker patches…maybe they are just getting darker as he is becoming an old man? Boy, I sure do worry about every little thing, don’t I?

In a way, it’s good that you worry so much! I’ll tell you I had such worries when I brought Theodore home because he also has a very small marking near his nostrils, so I thought he may have snuffles! Of course, he developed a minor URI a few weeks later, but it was easily solved with some Bactrim. :p

It’s probably a good sign that you’re not hearing it as much, but you can rest assured that you’ll get some answers once you go to the vet.

Yeah, I’m hopeful at this point that it isn’t as serious as I initially thought, but its always better to check. I’m sure Gizmo will not be thrilled to be at the vet….again!

I took a break from staring at his nose (lol) and when I looked at it again, it looked fine. I think my brain was warping the image in my head
