My bunny is about 4 months old and has been castrated for a few weeks. He was really good at first but over the last week he has started spraying the walls and biting me after I pat him. As in he’ll let me pat him for a bit and then when I start taking my hand away he’ll bite me and push my hand with his front paws to get rid of it.

I never had a spraying problem before he was castrated and I’m not really sure why he’s started. He coats the kitchen cupboards and has now started on a wall in the dining room as well. I’ve tried cleaning it up really quickly and when I catch him he knows he’s doing the wrong thing. I thought it was because he wanted his favourite food and knew where it was kept but I’ve been making sure he has a bit of excess food and he still does it.

Any ideas on how to deal with this?

It may be that his body is still flushing out the hormones, and thus he’s still exhibiting hormonal behaviors like spraying. As for the biting, he may be getting upset when you’re stopping. Some rabbits bite and get tempermental when their partners or humans stop grooming them! The only thing I can suggest for this is to take your hand away more quickly…

As for the spraying, wait for a couple more weeks and if he’s continuing to do it, you may want to keep him inside his enclosure for longer periods at a time so that he can understand what territory is his and what might not be. Water and vinegar does a great job of cleaning up rabbit urine, by the way, in case you didn’t know.

wait, how are the cupboards being sprayed… are they really low or is he high?

as far as the biting goes, it could be that he wants you to stop. i’m terms of behavioral contingencies, if the function of his biting behavior is to gain attention, it is imperative that you don’t give him that attention. In other words, make sure you don’t go back to petting him after he bites you as this would reinforce his biting behaviors.
