Hi guys does anyone have tips on how to keep them from turning brown so fast. When I feed them to my bun I want them to be nice and crispy. But veggies always tarnish in our fridge fast.

I shop once a week. As soon as I get home, rinse and soak everything in ice cold water, spin in salad spinner, spread on paper towels and blot any water left, wrap in paper towels, put veggies wrapped in paper towels in ziploc baggies, squeeze air out. Still fresh when I use the last of it 7 to 9 days later. Some things like dandelion greens and dill won’t last that long – maybe 5 days? Can’t do it with basil but it shouldn’t be refrigerated anyway or it will turn dark.

The biggest thing to remember is to only buy veggies that you’re going to use quickly, so they won’t sit around for too long and spoil.

Do you have a veggie crisper? I’ll tell you what I do — I mix all the greens together for the bunny salad and put them in a plastic bag (like a shopping bag), then I put those inside a plastic bowl with a lid loosely fitted to the top. Then I put that bowl into a veggie crisper drawer of our fridge.

Right before I serve the salad each morning, I wash the salad portion with cold water (this is good for their digestion, makes them more interested, and helps keep them cool during hot days), and then give straight to bun. It seems to be working great for me so far, as the veggies stay very fresh for quite some time. I think the key is to prevent oxygenation.

I chop them into smaller pieces, put them in zip lock bags and store in the refrigerator. Half hour before I am planning to feed her, I soak these chopped veggies in a bow of water. The veggies get hydrated and get really crispy.

Hey thanks everyone I will surely try this
Funny Looking rabbit I do not have a veggie crisper. I mean the drawer says veggies but for some reason it always gets too cold to the point it will create frost on some of the veggies and make them brown quicker. Have you ever heard of the forever bags? I no longer see them advertised on tv but I have a few and its supposed to keep the air from getting to the veggies or fruit and keep the good gases in so that they stay fresh longer.

They still carry something similar at Bed Bath and Beyond, and BB&B also carries a thing that does the same as the bags but is shaped like an apple. I did alot of web searching for ways to keep bunny salad stuff fresh, and the key is to keep moisture away, hence drying the lettuce and putting paper towels in the bag or container. This was the first week I’ve done something more delicate this way, and my dill is still fresh on day 6. BTW, if you ever try what I described, you don’t have to put the bags in a crisper drawer since they’re zipped up and have paper towels to absorb moisture. Another BBer does something similar with papertowels — she makes salads up in paper towel tacos so all is ready to serve!

How adorable… and functional! Yes, I agree, I don’t think you need a crisper drawer necessarily… and certainly don’t use it if it causes frosting!

For prepackaged salad in clam shell boxes you can just put a few paper towels in the top of the box to reduce moisture and condensation.
