After being neutered in May, my rabbit has become pretty distant. He doesn’t go downstairs to see my parents anymore or hop up on my bed. Mostly, he just stays in one area of my room. I’ve tried to give him toys, but he’s not really interested in them. He’ll come out and eat and let me pet him, then just goes back to his spot. Is there anything I can do for him to get him more active or is he just naturally a grump?

Although it’s already been a few months, he may need a little more time to adjust. Is he acting lethargic, and/or is he eating and going to the bathroom normally?

If so. He may just need some more bonding — you may want to hand feed him some treats and spend some time around him without being too overbearing on him, so that he remembers that his environment is safe.

He eats and goes to the bathroom fine. Doesn’t seem to be bothered. He’s always been a bit lazy and doesn’t run around much, but I wouldn’t really call it lethargic. I hang out with him on the floor and give him treats. I’m just concerned that he seems less interested in everyone.

This is not due to neutering but this is due to age – as rabbits age, they are just more comfortable and less active – really most rabbits are more active dusk and dawn. It’s not being anti-social, it’s just the way of the rabbit.

                I agree with Sarita
This is probably actually age and the neutering. My old male rabbit was a bit lazier after he turned about 20 months . And the neuturing does calm them down a bit because they are not as hormonal. Right now I have a female who needs spay and she bounces off the wall. I want her to be energetic like that but its also not safe for them to not be spay because of type of cancer. If you go to look up your bunnies symptoms as everyone here says you will find that it is common for older bunnies/nuetured bunnies to be more laid out . It doesnt mean he doesnt love you , if he was really against you he’d thump his foot and growl when your near. I’d just give it time.

I have to agree with Sarita and Brittinay. Not to mention, if you think about it, his whole body has changed. He’s gone from being pumped full of hormones to having no production of them whatsoever. That has to have an effect physically and psychologically on a bun. I wouldn’t worry too much about this, though — I have a feeling he’ll be back to his old self, or at least, a calmer version of his old self, in no time at all. c:

Probably right. My parents have just been complaining that he doesn’t go see them anymore. I’m also taking him to the vet tomorrow for a check up.

Also If your bunny starts being lethargic almost ALL DAY and eating and drinking habits change get him to the vet asap. Another over looked symptom of your bunny may be sick is repulsive shedding , dont get me wrong rabbits do go through shedding periods but if your rabbit is shedding to the point you basically have hair in your hand when you pet him or his cage his suddenly looks like a fur coat. Regardless if he still looks like he has alot of fur take him to the vet. This can be a serious over looked sign that your rabbit is in distress and is ill. Their species is very well known for hiding symptoms until it is almost too late.

Best regards I’ll try to keep checking back

You may even notice his activity level go up when he loses that extra weight. I know when Bumpy starts to get a little chunky he definitely gets more lazy. When he’s fit the activity level goes back up and binkies return!
