My question is- what to use for flea control in the house? We have 4 bunnies, 2 dogs, 1 cat & 1 hamster & 3 kids in our house. I’ve been doing some online research & have read that DE (diatomaceous earth- food grade) is safe for rabbits? I can pick that up at our feed store. Otherwise when I called our local vet he wasn’t sure- they primarily deal with large animals. Called another vet at an animal hospital & they only recommended puppy/kitten Revolution for $23 per bunny. Another said he’d heard you can use Sevin (garden dust) but he wasn’t positive. Someone on another site told me to wash her with Dawn dish soap but I can’t imagine how she would become an itchy dry mess- not to mention I wouldn’t be able to get her face/ears anyway. We live in a very rural community & I’ll have to drive a ways no matter what I get for them but I need to get on it! I’ve only 2 fleas on my lionhead so far but nobody else yet- it’s still early! HELP!

Revolution, kitten formula is probably the best thing to use. You put the drops on the back of their neck where they can’t lick. You could also use Advantage.

You need to check and recheck all the animals, go through their fur with a flea comb and determine if any of the others have fleas. Then they will have to be treated also if they do have them. You have to keep the house very well vacuumed. Fleas only live on the animal at certain times to feed. At other times they are in rugs, carpets, curtains, etc, where they lay eggs. Do not use Sevin dust and do not wash your bunny with Dawn.

You can also buy or make a flea trap. It may not trap many fleas, but hopefully it would get some, and it is a way to monitor how many fleas may be in your house. Here are the instructions for making one: http://www.ehow.com/how_2252856_make-flea-trap.html

Revolution Puppy and Kitten (under 2.5 kg/5 lbs) is the best I have found and you should be able to buy it less expensively. Are you somewhere that requires a vet prescription ? If not, buy it online in the multi packs. I can get 3 doses for between $30-$35. Check with some other vets and the stock feeders and you may be able to purchase from them over the counter.

Also, to help with the flea life cycle, put salt on your rugs and dont let any rabbit, cat, or nothin’ lick the salt and vacuum after 24 hours.
