Jack is our first rabbit! He is a very handsome big bunny. We got him on a scale yesterday and he weighed in at 10lb. We think he is some kind of chinchilla mix, perhaps a Giant Chinchilla or something along those lines, although at about a year old we expect he is fully grown now. We just adopted him through a local rabbit sanctuary this week. Jack had actually been living with a foster family for the last several months; they had hoped to bond him with their pair but it wasn’t working out. He is very curious about his new home but quite sweet and friendly, too. He’s happy to climb into our laps and does lots of teeth chattering purrs when he’s sprawled out and being pet.

We built him a home that’s 4×3 grids, with a base tiled in vinyl and edged with wood for him to chew, and to keep some of the hay contained. You can see here he has been playing with a hay stuffed tube on his rug. At least one of us, my husband or I, is working at home most days, so we intend to have him free in the living room as much as possible. We’ve blocked the two entrances to the living room with baby gates and have all the cords and things pretty well bunny proofed, but he’s also been supervised whenever he’s out.

So far he’s been enjoying flopping out by the couch, running binkies back and forth, and checking out the view from the window sill.

So that’s Jack! I’ve been reading a lot about rabbits these past few months in anticipation of adopting one, especially here and on the HRS website. And I’m guessing most of you are familiar with these videos, but we’ve learned a lot from watching the Amy Sedaris/Mary E. Cotter howcasts. I do have some questions about his size, territorial pooping, etc., but it sounds like I should make separate posts for those.

Welcome welcome! Jack is absolutely adorable. He does look like he could have some Giant Chin in him somewhere. So glad to see another rescued bunny, and so glad you’re doing your research! We’re here to help with all your bunny needs. Welcome!
