Ok, so my rabbit is between 6-12 months old (we found him outside). She gets unlimited alfalfa and timothy hay everyday that we grow on my cousin’s farm. Everyday I give her fresh kale, arugula, and chard to supplement.

Are pellets really necessary? I read online that pellets for bunnies only came out after WWII to help fatten rabbits faster… I am sort of a health nut and I feel like pellets are just garbage food that makes them fatter (there’s ingredients in them that aren’t good).

Do rabbits really need them to stay healthy? This is my first bunny so I don’t wanna screw her up!

        Thanks friends!

Alfalfa is great for young rabbits that are growing but as they get older, its not a good idea to feed them alfalfa due to the high calorie and protein content. In fact having access to unlimited alfalfa is probably highly unhealthy to rabbits in the long run.

I’m not sure if pellets are absolutely necessary, so i’m sure someone else can comment, however, I do know that it provides good nutrients and if given the right amount daily, constitutes a well rounded diet.

From my readings, rabbits should be getting pellets (as determined by their weight), fresh veggies, and unlimited access to timothy hay and water for the best diet

Pellets Arent Something that You HAVE to give but there is no harm as long as its a good brand. Oxbow is What i feed my bunny, and pellets should be given in Very limitedly or your rabbit will get fat. As long as it’s a good brand of pellets I Say you should.

I always offer pellets daily to Henry – it just gives me peace of mind that if I can’t access a particular veggie due to cost (I refuse to pay ridiculous prices for certain veg, though I have been known to – don’t tell my hubby! Lol!) or unavailability, the nutrients in his good quality (Oxbow) pellets is a reliable supplement and it takes away any concerns I have with him having a healthy balanced diet.
Just keeps it easy for me Bunnylove12, and I don’t have to worry….. Cheers.

PS – and I find pellets very affordable for the small amount I give him daily, compared to how much I spend on his veggies every week! ha ha ha…..

Ditto to everything AH said, including how much I spend on bunny veggies each week!

Thanks everyone for the advice! I’ll start her on pellets!
