Hello, my bunny Monroe is usually very active in the morning and always jumps out of his cage to run around as soon as I open it. He nornally calms down around midday and will lay around in his favorite spots throughout my bedroom and living room. But lately, for the last 2 days or so he won’t leave his cage until later in the evening. Should I be worried? I’ve read that lathargic rabbits can be a sign of trouble but Monroe has just switched his activity to later in the day. He is only about 8 months old so could it be age related? Any insight will be greatly appreciated. I’m super concerned.

Is he eating and drinking water fine? How about urine and poop? Lethargy can be a sign, and in general rabbits mask if they are injured for survival reasons so it can be difficult to judge

Not eating or going to the bathroom can tell tale signs as well

His urine and poop is normal. He is not eating or drinking as much during the day as he normally does but I notice him eating more during the evening/night ( he eats for longer periods of time rather than coming back for multiple visits) and he will finish all his hay by the next morning. His water intake is normal but again is only in the evening or nighttime hours.

Sounds like normal bunny active time. Now that he’s older he’s probably getting into a nice routine with your active times and their active times. Rabbits are crepuscular (active dawn and dusk) by nature. However, I’ve found that even though mine sometimes are active at those times, if I change my schedule and find sleeping/active times are switched, they will adjust their times a little as well.

Is it hot where you are? Most bunnies are much less active when it’s hot.

I’ve read that they are more active dusk and dawn and I think thats all this is. I’m just concerned that he isnt coming out of his cage like he normally does. He will usually come out when I open it in the morning, do some binkies and exploring and then go lay down in his favorite spot for a while. Lately he will just hide in his hidey hole that’s in his cage all morning until I coax him out with his greens. Maybe I’m just being overly worried but he’s my first bunny and I’m still learning all their habits and behaviors.

It has been hot here lately. I’m in Chicago and we’ve been having fairly hot days with high humidity. Also we have had some bad thunderstorms.

im not super experienced with bunny behavior but not coming out of the cage may not mean its a bad sign. I think eating and voiding habits are more tell tale signs. Have you tried enticing with some novel toys or things for him to do?

Well, I have been having similar problems with my Moshu. Two weeks back she used to be active enough to make me cry, but now she is lying on the floor 80 % of the day. Besides lethargy, she is also showing a slight decrease in her appetite. Decrease in activity and appetite isnt a good combination. I am taking mine to a vet on Saturday (I am suspecting there is something wrong with the hay I gave her, though I do tend to be a worrywart, especially when it comes to her)

If vet bills are an issue, I can totally empathize with that since I face a similar situation. You may want to wait a few days. Sometimes Moshu’s poops are softer than they should be and she gets lethargic, but with the right food she gets back on track in a matter of 2-3 days.

Keep a check on her poops, her food and water intake, body language (read some articles on rabbit body language). But if her body language are showing signs of pain, try to take her to a vet. Since you mentioned its hot in Chicago these days, you can wet the back of her ears with water as that will help them reduce their body temperature. Try to feel her stomach. If it feels tight and bloated, you may want to read about GI statis.
