So, we discovered, the day we got possession of the new house, that there was a roach problem. This is the same day I discovered I have a phobia of roaches. An unexplainable, illogical, flat out fear of roaches. I have panic attacks when we find them. I refuse to turn off the lights in the kitchen and bathroom because I don’t want the sudden light scuttle happening. I’m afraid of both kitchen and bath and will only venture to fridge and toilet/sink ( both right inside the doors) we immediately started treating with traps and initially it seeemed to help. But just tonight we found several babies and a couple of adults. There was one in my fridge!!!!! Sigh.
I never knew I had this problem. I have no idea what the source of it is. It’s stupid and I know that, but I can’t help it. Have you discovered any phobias you didnt know you had til you had it?
Try treating your floors with borax powder. Keep buns away from it of course so they don’t ingest it. But, it kills roaches pretty effectively.
I don’t blame you about the roaches! I cannot think of any phobias I really have but I do hate roaches – I hope you get your roach problem under control so you feel better!
roaches are very gross.
Last year in a nearby lake these guys I know found a very big freshwater eel that was dead in the water. Ever since then when I go swimming in that lake I can literally have a panic attack if i feel grass or some plant touch me. I have no fear of eels though, I think they are very interesting creatures and would love a tank with some of those pretty eels in them, so I don’t really understand this “phobia.”
I can’t find borax powder. I hate those things. No phobia tho. Don’t like heights. Yes any water I can’t see thru I feel something under my feet not sand or rock eeeeek. Like in a river or lake or pond its muddy forget it. I can’t stand it. Muddy or grassy. Gives me the willies. I ran right back out
If you can’t find it locally, bunnytowne, you can buy it online. It’s even sold on etsy.
I do not miss roaches! We had them really bad when I was a teenager in a house we moved into. My mother got rid of them with a gel that is sold at walmart. I can’t remember the name other than it had Combat in it. We woke up with hundreds of dead roaches all over the kitchen floor it was pretty gross. But I personally wouldn’t use it because my pets could possibly get access to it somehow.
I have stupid phobias like balloons or those biscuits that come in a can (basically anything that makes a loud pop sound).
I am afraid of fire and water. No idea why but I have nightmares about being trapped in something that is on fire all the time and I refuse to use the grill. Not a bad deal though … my husband loves everything grilled (year round even when it’s -40 F) so he does all the cooking! I think I have cooked for us maybe a dozen times since he moved in! And for the water thing it’s just big bodies of water like a lake or a river. I have to close my eyes and clench my hands everytime we have to drive over a bridge. The thing that gets me the worst though is when we are out looking for new fishing spots or to check on water levels on our favorites and he drives right up to the edge of the water. Even though I know he isn’t going to drive in, it’s all I can do not to jump out of the car.
Sonn, although I am not afraid of balloons or canned biscuits, I have to admit that I do stand way back and do the stretch-reach before hitting the biscuit can on the edge of the counter. I do let someone else pop balloons, not so much because of the noise but because flying pieces of balloon could put an eye out!!!
A little story you would be able to appreciate . . . Years ago we were driving through Tennessee on like a 10 lane divided highway. I was on the 2nd lane from the shoulder. A tractor-trailer on the exact opposite side heading the other direction blew a tire. (Keep in mind that everyone on the highway in Tennessee drives at least 90 mph!). When the truck’s tire blew, I immediately thought I’d been shot at — driving at lightening speed in traffic and my reaction is to duck down behind the steering wheel and start feeling my head and chest for bullet wounds! Hubby just stared at me like I’d lost my mind!
So, I guess I have a fear of tractor trailers. Don’t care what the speed limit is, I am speed racer when I have to pass one of those things because I KNOW it will blow a tire and shoot me if I drive beside one!
LOL you’re scared of tractors JR?!
Is a roach a cockroach?
Hmmm, fears…
I can’t stand bugs that move in a convulsing sort of way, so, caterpillars, maggots, worms… Eugh! Not a phobia though.
I also have a bit of a weird thing about pregnancy. The thought of it creeps me out….it’s like an alien or a tapeworm or something! (Sorry LPT and anyone else who’s pregnant!) Because of that I also hate anything to do with eggs (chicken eggs or big eggs are fine though). Random, I know!
All these phobias are giving me a good laugh. (I’m sorry I know this shouldn’t be funny but…)
Tessie— Alien? Tapeworm? LOL.
Tessie — not just tractors, tractor trailer trucks in case I’m near one when it blows a tire.
Pregnancy does actually feel like you have an alien inside you some of the time. Then, when the child becomes a teenager, you *know* there really was an alien in there!
Seriously, I can remember being about 7 months along and sitting in a meeting. I had a buldge that slowly moved across my belly . . . Visibly! It felt like a big hard bubble moving and I was laughing so hard I was crying. My boss was furious but I couldn’t help it! There truly is no other feeling like it in the world.
Lolabuns — I’ll have to agree with you on the fire thing. I am terrified of fires. It’s a reasonable fear though — I’ve seen too many bad fire things happen. I’ll have to add guns to list too.
Moxie, if we can’t laugh about our fears, especially when they are odd ones, then they can consume us.
BTW, I will not, under any circumstances, touch raw chicken! As far as I’m concerned, every piece of raw chicken is covered in salmonella and we’ll all get sick and die if we touch it! My husband handles all chicken in our house, but only after everything comes off the counter and the counter is completely covered in wax paper. When the chicken is safely in a pan, everything must be disinfected. How’s that for an oddball phobia?!?!
Oh Bruno I’m sorry. =[ At least you don’t live in Florida, our roaches fly. >.>
If it makes you feel any better, I have a massive phobia of spiders that has only gotten worse since living in Florida. I’m telling you the massive amounts of heat we get here just allows the insects to grow weirdly big and pick up weird gross insect ‘super powers’. I, also, have been increasingly growing a phobia of raw meat. I used to hate touching it. Now I can’t really stand to cook it. It physically makes me sick to be around it. =\
I have a random, unexplainable phobia of lighting matches. I’m ok with fire, holding matches, lighting candles with pre-lit matches, but actually lighting the match-won’t do it. I really have no idea why, and I know it’s really silly, but there you go.
They still make matches?
I think so-at least we still have some in our house. The hubby uses them, but I am fine with my electric lighter, ha ha ha!
I don’t have any phobias so far. My mom, however, is extremely afraid of reptiles and amphibians. I like to tease her and send her pictures of snakes, toads, lizards and frogs. They are just cute little animals to me. I would never hold out a real one in front of her though because she really freaks out. One time she picked up a plant and a little tree frog hopped out of it onto her hand. It scared her so much that she ran to her bedroom and passed out on her bed. A few months ago I was in the car with her and she saw a bunch of lizards sitting on rocks. She started to scream. It was funny since they were outside the car and could not possibly go near her.
Sometimes I call her when I’m on my walks and when I see a lizard I like to tell her about it to get her, “No, no, yucky!!!!” reactions. “They’re not yucky, just cute.” I argue.
The ironic thing about her phobia is that she likes to collect frog things to decorate her apartment with. Only real frogs scare her.
Edit: I just saw the replies about matches. I guess I can call that a phobia of mine. When I was a kid I lit a match and ended up burning my thumb. I haven’t lit a match since. I prefer to use the lighters with long sticks on them so the flame is far away from my hand. haha
I haven’t seen matches in years! I prefer lighters too — let go and the fire goes out, with matches, let go and something’s gonna get burned.
Kirsty your mom sounds like how I am with spiders! It’s just too funny though that she collects frog themed trinkets. I’m with you though. I think lizards are just too cute.
JR we have a bunch of matches here in FL. I think it’s mainly because they stock up on matches and lighters when it comes to hurricane season.
Sorry for laughing, but gee, that was good (funny!), thanks for that! My phobia is Huntsman Spiders! They are not poisonous – just big (small body/looong leg’s everywhere) and they can jump and fall from the ceiling on you while you sleep! Eeeeek!
Sorry guys… I ‘love’ water and fire! My dream house would be beside the water with a big fire pit! (that I can poke with a stick). Ha ha ha!
PS – do you want me to mention my OCD phobia’s? LOL! Like the thought of someone making a sandwich on my ‘clean’ kitchen bench before I fold the ‘clean’ clothes on it, ha ha ha ha ha!!! And lets not forget my handwash (liquid soap) bottle being empty when I NEED to wash my hands! LOL!
Edit to ADD – BUTTER! (marjorine or whatever you want to call it), I will run a mile screaming if you try to feed it to me, cook in it, or touch me with a dab on your finger!
Lol AH- how do you do any baking if you can’t handle butter?
Anatidaephobia is the fear that somewhere somehow a duck is watching you. I honestly want this phobia just for its silliness.
ICK! Ha ha ha ha BM! I use oil (omega 3) as a replacement when ‘I’ cook. But if the hubby bakes a cake, I can tolerate butter (that he handles) as part of the ingredients – BUT not the icing! I can smell and taste it – so we buy cake mixes (remember, this is the hubby baking….) with the pre made icing or I add cream (LOVE cream! I know, strange hey??? Lol!).
Your not gonna believe this……. The 2 pets I’ve always wanted is a bunny and a DUCK! ha ha ha! So far I’ve got the bunny, I’ll let you know how I go when I get my duck (don’t tell the hubby, but I will get it – eventually!) and how I go if it ‘watches me’! (it may not be that silly???) LOL!!!
Brunosmama— That would be a VERY silly phobia. I want it.
AH, I used to have 5 ducks. We incubated them and hatched them out. They were awesome pets, even though they can be a little “dumb.”
I guess if I can be afraid of raw chicken, then you can be afraid of butter AH! So, what do you put on toast?
Oh my gosh BM xD That is such a silly phobia. Is there any way to subliminally give it someone? The bf has been bugging me for years to get a pet duck. I keep telling him no. Maybe if he gets the phobia he won’t want one…
Ooohhhh. JR good question. What do you eat with your toast AH??
VEGEMITE!
And your hubby is the best ever BB! We are gonna have ducks together as soon as Moxie hatches them for us!
So what’s your hubby gonna call his DUCK???
LOL!
I knew you were going to say that! I was going to say, “let me guess . . ” but I couldn’t remember how to spell it!
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha JR!
Sometimes I go overboard and have Vegemite AND cream cheese! (both on the one slice of toast) YUM!
AH, Sometimes, we’ll have strangers pull up to our house and ask us if we have any ducklings available, because they purchased some the year before and they turned out so pretty, docile and healthy.
I can’t Incubate any more, sorry AH. A couple years ago my 5 pet ducks were sold when I was away, he thought they were for sale and A man came over (that we had never met before) and bought them. That was too tragic of an expierience for me, coming home and finding out my pets had been sold while I was away? Uhg. :'(
Well, we still had ducklings left from our last batch of eggs. My sister bought a parrot that apperently had some undiagnosed disease that she passed to the ducklings. A lot of them died and it was too stressful. Also worrying about losing power while you are incubating them? (the incubator would shut off, get cold and the eggs would die.) I just don’t think I can incubate anytime soon. At least not ducks.
I’m thinking about starting again next spring or so though, if I can find fertilized eggs.
Now on a happy note.
What the heck is Vegemite?
Moxie – it’s a made up word in a song and may have something to do with kookaburra . . . at least that’s what I thought before our dear Aussie buddies educated me!
Aussie folks, please explain and enlighten another one of us Vegemite-deprived BBers!
I’M GETTING CONFUSED!!!!!!!! If it’s a made up word in a song, how is AH eating it on toast?!?! lol
lol it’s a spread that is popular in Australia and Europe… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegemite it sounds disgusting though.
Moxie — I will no longer question what AH eats on her toast! Although, the baked beans on toast did not sound bad . . .!
Stickerbunny – maybe if you put enough cream cheese on there . . . !
JR – I don’t like cream cheese though ! I only like butter on toast. haha
And we come full circle …..!
I have never heard of biscuits that come in a can! I have two phobias, spiders and vomit. Even the smallest spider sends me into a panic attack and I’m all skittish for a good few hours after. My partner doesn’t let me kill them though so our compromise is that he has to come rescue me (and the spider) while I plaster myself against the wall as far away as possible. I can’t even deal with pictures – I have an add-on for Facebook where you can type in things that you want blocked from your newsfeed which is very helpful
As for the vomit… that’s pretty crippling. I rigorously inspect chicken before I eat it, and if I have heard of someone getting food poisoning from anywhere I boycott it, even if it was just a once time thing. I barely drink, and even then it’s only a glass or two of wine, then when I start feeling sick it ruins my night. I get food aversions really easily, even if I know in my mind that it’s ridiculous. I hide my eyes and block my ears whenever it happens on TV, and when my partner had a tummy bug last week…. Well let’s just say there was loud music playing at 2am LOL
Ok, I’m a dork and didn’t realise there was a second page to this thread. I just want to say….. Marmite is SO much better than Vegemite!!
Had to look up marmite (Moxie – it’s a real word but apparently no song to go with it!). I think I’ll stick with butter for my toast and cream cheese for my bagel!
I wonder how AH would make a grilled cheese sandwich?
Hmmm…..I dunno about these Vegemite and Marmite spreads you guys are talking about. They don’t sound too appetizing to me… >.> But to each their own. =]
Awww Moxie. =[ I’m so sorry about your ducks. I would be totally devastated if someone did that to me. Is everything okay with your sister’s parrot? I don’t know how you deal with the stress of incubation. I would demand to have 24/7 cameras on those little eggs to periodically check on them. XD
AH I have no clue what he would name a duck. I would have to ask him. XD
Edit: So I asked the bf would he name a duck. He said it would have to something Billingsworth. So we came up with Allister Billingswoth. xD
BB – love the duck name! My sister and I want ducks named Ping and Pong, because of a book with ducklings as the main characters we loved as kids.
I think I will stick to jam on my toast. My sister’s bf is from England and he like the baked beans on toast thing. Sounds shifty to me!
Oh, another strange phobia. My husband is afraid of cheerios. He shudders and cringed when I show them to him. He won’t let me buy them often either, but he doesn’t know why they scare him lol
BunnyBrigade— It’s okay. My ducks were named Happy Feet, Raven, Fluffernutter(I always pronounced it Fluff-un-utter), J.J. (her name was jellybean as a baby but quickly became almost the biggest duck. so we called her J.J., short for Jumbo Jellybean.) and Peanut.
Your hubby is afraid of Cheerios BM?
I hate spiders, did I mention that? I also don’t like big moths when they fly at my face… Or big beetles…
Moxie – yep, he’s afraid of Cheerios. He won’t eat them, won’t hang around if I’m eating them, and gets squeamish when he is around them. Sometimes I buy a box just to torment him! Bwa hahahahaha! (Evil laugh)
