I have a 5 month old boy bunny, unneutered.  He pees and poops everywhere, except in his own cage.  And he likes peeing on soft things, like towels, especially yellow towels.  I know he is marking his territory, especially because he is pretty new here, but I thought bunnies were supposed to sort of be neat and go in one spot.  Also, why doesn’t he go at all in his cage?  Is he trying to keep his own living space clean, yet getting the rest of our house messy?  Very funny and strange – just curious about this?

He doesn’t go in his cage because that is “his” already. Everything else, especially soft things because they absorb smell, however, smells like human, and he thinks he needs to make it smell like him so he will own it.
This is completely normal behavior, considering he is new and intact. He is right at the age where marking is the worst. I would get him neutered, as this should help tremendously with the marking.

I agree with everything LEL said, this is normal behavior for an unneutered rabbit at his age.

Do you have a rabbit vet already? When are you planning on neutering him?

Wow, thanks everyone. This is so helpful. Yes, we were referred to a great rabbit vet. We plan to neuter him when he is 6 months old – I’m waiting til then to make sure he is old and strong enough to endure the surgery. Wow, I knew it was territorial markings, though I didn’t know it would be this bad. There seems to be a great debate online over whether it is practically impossible to litter box train an unneutered bunny – for us this seems to be the case, though I’ve read about other rabbits who aren’t neutered and are still tidy with their poop and pee.
              Thanks!!
