I just added bunny #2 to the family. When I first went to see her she was 8 weeks old and was a dark brown/black color with no ticking. When I got her home I noticed that her fur is changing colors and wondered if she could be a gold/silver tipped steel. Now my question is would the steel gene have shown up before now or is it normal to show up around this age? If shes not a steel what could be the reason for the color change? The first 2 photos are the same but the first is with the flash. color on feet

I’m wondering if she might havw a little agouti coloring in her background somewhere (if that’s possible). Kieko’s skin and fur way down are just as gray (even her belly is gray skin and gray fur closer to her body before each belly hair tops in white. Kieko also looks like she’s got gold tipped guard hairs in the light. We don’t know exactly what Kieko is breedwise so she just falls in the “bunny rabbit” category! At least you know your girl is definitely a lop!

For many colors, babies will shed their “baby coat” and their true adult coat will grow in. I think everyone comments on how their buns’ coats changed from baby to adult.

The genetics of color is very complicated. I found this page that discusses genetics of the “steel” coloring.

JackRabbit can she still be agouti even if she doesn’t have white the white belly or other markings? Her coat is a bluish grey closer to the skin but her skin is another story. She has darker skin in certain areas and pink skin in others.LBJ thank you for the link and i guess I’ll just have to wait and see what color she stays.
