Hey everyone, I was just wondering how safe store bought treats are? I’ve read Rabbits love dried up apple slices. Which I intend on getting when they’re in season. But I’m mostly referring to Vitalkraft? I just got back from the pet store with their Slims Carrots, and their triple baked crunch stick. I know some of their products are unhealthy, but couldn’t find any reviews or anything on the kind I bought. The ingredients seem alright? I gave him one of the carrot sticks, which he seems to really like.

        Thanks so much!

Main ingredients are wheat, corn and soy … so not the best treats. Bunnies don’t really need a lot of grains in their diet. It’s essentially a flour biscuit (kind of makes me think of corn chips for us) with probably a few carrot pieces in each one. I don’t see any thing there that will hurt the buns, just wouldn’t be my choice of a treat.

You can go shopping for treats at the local grocery store, usually where I go. Dried cranberries, dried apple slices, etc are kept year round in the grocery stores around here. You want the fruit that is JUST fruit though, not sulfur dioxide (which, most the stupid treats in the pet stores have that in them) or any other nonsense. Preferably no sugar added, but sometimes that isn’t available, so I just limit it more if it has sugar. You can also buy a dehydrator for like $20 and make your own at home – sliced fruit (banana, papaya, pineapple, apple, etc) or veggies (carrots, kale chips)

Aw, that’s unfortunate. I figured store treats were a little unhealthy, but not to that extent. I’ll definitely rely on the grocery store for my future purchases for treats. I thought it would be nice to try, but new bunny owner ignorance on my end.

            Thanks so much. =)

I rarely buy treats for my bunnies. I actually shudder at the thought that I used to give them those yogurt drop treats and seed laden bars. But when I do buy that occasional treat, it’s always from the Oxbow line. I trust their food and I trust their treats as well. Once in awhile I’ll also buy those timothy hay cubes to switch things up.

I either use Oxbow Veggie Treats or Barley Biscuits or Smaks Cookies. Both are sold here in the BB store.

Anything Oxbow is healthy. My bunnies love all the Oxbow cookies. I also buy Sunseed Dry Papaya to give as treats.

I mostly feed dried fruit as treats, but occasionally I do give an oxbow treat, an oxbow supplement treat (they love these!) or a oxbow papaya tab. Basically anything oxbow. They also get dried herb mixes for a little healthy treat.

Look In To Treats before you buy =D
