Hi, so im pretty new to the bunny world and this forum, and i got my bunny yesterday.

But the breeder did not write the date of birth, and it turns out he is only 5 WEEKS old. He is far too young. He was old enough to leave his mom, but he should have stayed 4 weeks with her siblings before coming to me.

He drinks water, eats hay, grass and pellets and is okay. He is a bit stressed, but he seems fine

But my question is: What should i do? does he need something extra? Or do something different?? How should i care for him? How do i care for a baby rabbit?? It is pretty urgent, and i appreciate all sorts of response                                                                             Thanks

Do you have a vet yet? I would take him to a rabbit-savvy vet to get checked over and looked at to make sure he is growing healthy.

I do not know much about babies under 8 weeks old but I’m pretty sure they should remain with their mothers (not just their siblings) for 8 weeks. Poor thing! Glad he has someone who cares about him!

Ideally they should stay with Mum for 8 weeks but they can be OK from 4 weeks in an emergency situation. That was the age of Piglet and Pepper when they came to me from Rescue… They had a nice rich diet and have done very well. I do think a vet check is a good idea though just to make sure he is OK.

I was completely bunny ignorant then so I did research much the same as you…. As they had come from an open situation (free range backyard meat garden) they had unlimited everything. Hay non stop, pellets non stop and lots of fresh greens (Grass, Basil, parsley) But if your bun has coe from a breeder they may not be use to the greens… For Piglet and Pepper I think this gave them a lot of nutrients but you could do the same by getting a baby bunny specific pellet. You could try them on a little fresh grass (clean spot no pesticides or other animal urine) washed well. Maybe some fresh kale or spinach… Only give a tiny amount and if you see any runny poop stop immediately. The vet may suggest a vitamin supplement that can be added to their water… Some people have used goat milk in an oral syringe to supplement but really if they are eating hay and pellets and producing cecals. (They will look like they are washing their bottom by leaning under their own tummy but they are actually eating their cecal poops) then they should be fine… Just get the vet to give them a check up and if their weight is OK they should be fine to continue on what you are feeding them.

According to the house rabbit society, young rabbits should have unlimited pellets (preferably one designed for young rabbits), unlimited hay, and NO vegetables or fruits until 12 weeks. Alfalfa hay is best for very young rabbits, but if you have an alfalfa based young rabbit pellet then grass hay (timothy, orchard, meadow) is okay. rabbit.org is the website for the house rabbit society and under their FAQ section, they have all the basics you’ll need to care for your new friend.
